Last month, PAXY – the moniker of Naarm musician Bridget Leila – released the sumptuous moody and bluesy “Magnetic Field”, a song chronicling the challenges of dealing with the push and pull of forces that can’t be ignored. We are thrilled today to premiere the video for the track, a cinematic journey beautifully paired with the late-night darkly lit cafe feel of “Magnetic Field”.
PAXY takes a peek into her soul in the lyrics for “Magnetic Field”. There are worldly insights into the challenges we face during various phases of life. There’s a maturity to her vocals, which are rich and resonate with an old-school smoky warmth to them. It’s only the second release for PAXY, following on from “Sober” which was released earlier in the year. Exciting times ahead for the talented artist.
PAXY gives us some insight into the genesis of “Magnetic Field” – “I remember writing this song so vividly – I was sitting on the balcony of one of my best mates’ ex-girlfriends’ places in Sydney. I’d just spent the weekend being cheeky and reckless and ws in the midst of a comedown that made me realise that this magical, all-consuming electricity I was feeling was actually just intense magnetism that was seeing me make terrible decisions, yet I couldn’t pull myself away.”
The clip was filmed in Devilbend on the Mornington Peninsula. It was shot old-school, on black-and-white 16mm film and features a religious symbolic set design, by emerging production designer, Tiffany Dias. PAXY explains the significance of the symbolism: “The song speaks of a deep, intoxicating reverence which is why the religious symbolism was so important to me – the forbidden fruit, the bread, the wine”.
Keeping in theme with the black-and-white film used, there’s an old-school French cinema feel to it. It was directed and produced by Tori Styles of Wild Rose Pictures. “I felt like there was a really special unspoken shorthand with Tori – I said I wanted a little bit gothic and a little bit romantic – and she nailed it… all the while making me feel so comfortable in front of the camera – a position I utterly hate.”
Continuing on, PAXY expanded on the collaboration with stylist Molly Taylor, utilising pieces from Melbourne-based designers Von Myrce, Millie Savage and Cleopatra’s Bling, and the joy of working with the assembled team on the clip – “working with an all-female crew and getting decked out in beautiful items from a bunch of female-founded labels was so important to me and makes the clip that little bit more special. The divine energy made for a magical day, even despite the crazy rain”.
