Darkinjung/Central Coast-based pop-punk band Stone Lions have recently released the raucous “New Year’s Ghost”. New Year’s Eve can be such a mixed bag. It can be one of those nights where the euphoria infuses you and your mates and it’s the best night ever, or it can be one of those nights where you find yourself on your own in a blurry haze.
In recent years it has had the extra complication of various restrictions on crowds and travel. Let’s face it, it can be a complicated night. Stone Lions address the challenges of the night, and write: “‘New Year’s Ghost’ is a depiction of quintessential feelings associated with New Year’s Eve parties and resolutions. We felt we got caught up in the blackout parties and social stigma which led us to write an uplifting, yet haunting song about it. Encapsulating the excitement, fear, intimacy and loneliness that is New Year’s Eve.”
Stone Lions capture all the emotions in a packed flurry of pop punk. There’s a sweet melody running throughout, with the ripping guitars complemented by the soaring harmonies. It reaches its conclusion in just a touch over two minutes.
The band released their debut album, Necking On and Kicking Off in 2019, and their follow-up single “Stay” last year. “New Year’s Ghost” is their first release of 2023, and if they continue with quality releases such as this, 2023 should be a big year for Stone Lions.
The video was shot on the Central Coast and was filmed, edited and directed by guitarist Matt Veitch. The set was built by the band in a warehouse using flashing titan tube lighing. These guys know how to get stuff done.
