Melbourne singer-songwriter Tobias Hengeveld today releases Naughts & Ones, his anticipated third solo album. Coinciding with this release, we’re stoked this morning to bring you an exclusive first look at the accompanying visuals for ‘Separation Street’, the third single lifted from the completed album.
Directed and cut by Mark Murray, and shot by Adrian Harrold at the Caribbean Rollerama last month, the clip features Hengeveld, on a treadmill, amidst and adrift a group of roller skaters. His separation from those skaters hinting towards the subtle melancholy buried amidst the track’s 80’s west coast kitschy cool. According to Hengeveld, the single “is a soulful, shuffling take on how places in your hometown still echo loud with memory and map the big moments in your life. The video was shot in one furious evening at a roller rink buried deep in time and the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne.”
The track, which can be taken as a symbolic more widely of a lost relationship (romantic or otherwise), is striking and alluring, and features some lovely guitar work and vocals. The single’s added touches, the horns and the swaggering beat, all bring it together nicely too, adding to the almost nostalgic feel of the track – a feeling emphasised in part by the clip’s setting.
Check out the video below.
Hengeveld will be celebrating the launch of Naughts & Ones with two special launch shows, May 19th at The Bridge Hotel in Castlemaine and June 9th at the Gaso Bandroom in Melbourne. For more information and tickets head HERE.
