We have a very special premiere today, the video for the track “Stand” from the third album, Water and Dust, to be released tomorrow by William Crighton. It beautifully captures the essence of a William Crighton show. He is without a doubt one of the most authentic and dynamic storytellers and singer/songwriters in the country today. He has some shows coming up, details are below.
Hailing from the Riverina in Wiradjuri Country, William Crighton is renowned for his incredible live shows. With a towering presence, and a voice that booms and reaches into your inner soul, the messages conveyed can’t help but seep into the listener.
Amongst those helping out on “Stand” was his wife Julieanne “Jules” Crighton on vocals and Rob Hirst (Midnight Oil) on drums. It was recorded at Jim Moginie’s Oceanic Studios in Brookvale.
The song came together in the studio, with lyrics being tweaked with the help of Hirst. As Crighton mentioned one line he had: “Don’t stand on the side of the one who is blinding you.” Hirst suggested the next line, “Stand with the one who is kind to you”,. And with that, they were away.
Rather than record each part separately, they recorded the track together, live, as Hirst explains: “’Stand’ is bristling with fresh song, first take, all together-in-the-studio energy: we slammed it down with joy and without overthought – big fun was had by all.”
The video was produced and directed by Joshua Bruce, with the help of Brayden “Boots’ Porter. With live performances being so important to Crighton, it was only natural that the clip captures the essence of his shows. As William describes: ‘We wanted to capture the live energy of this song in a simple way and let the song tell the story. It was a lot of fun to make and some great work by the crew and Josh Bruce who produced and directed it.’
William is never one to claim all the credit. “If a song has spirit then other musicians feed on that and the song takes on a life of its own each time you play it”, he says. “If the musicians don’t get it, then who is going to get it? I put a lot of faith in having the right people in the room and trusting their contributions”
