There’s nothing better than discovering a band before they break into the market. You get to see them earn their chops while you stand front and centre, learning every song and becoming one of their first fans. But sometimes it helps to have an idea about where to look! This week on the AU we’ll be traversing the country and bringing you some of our favourite new discoveries in the local scene. After sending you to Melbourne yesterday, today we continue our series in Sydney with these five artists, in no particular order:
Setec
Setec is Joshua Gibbs, a Sydney based producer who makes luscious, textural soundscapes topped with delicate vocals. His latest record Brittle As Bones came out last August. Off the record came this track, “Water or Concrete”, that you can listen to here:

Why We Run
This new Sydney outfit formed out of the ashes of the underrated Sydney group Cogel, and their first single “Comfortable Lie” has already been given rotation on Double J, Unearthed Radio, 2SER and Rage. The video was premiered by Rolling Stone, shared by Gotye and Rob Thomas. As you do. Now’s the time to get onto this group!

Gypsys of Pangea
“They have a really strong stage presence and are very mature songwriters even though they’re only around 19-20. Their live shows are like a big party, everyone gets into crazy dancing, people jump up on stage and crowd surf. I highly recommend them! Their sound is very 60s psych, lots of long guitar solos and a lot of distortion. They always have incense burning on stage at their shows just to add to the atmosphere!” – Justine McNamara

Caitlin Harnett
And finally we have the amazing Caitlin Harnett, who is kicking goals both here in Sydney and abroad. She’ll be touring the USA through May and June with “South Carolina’s finest looking gentleman” Susto, and just wrapped up a series of shows through April. Living comfortably in the world of folk and roots music, her voice is exquisite and she’s a superb songwriter. The sky’s the limit for this one and we can’t wait to see what she gets up to next…
