Gettin' to know the 6th Birthday Bands: Fortunes (Melbourne)

We get to know the bands playing our 6th Birthday Party in Melbourne next Tuesday night… next up are Fortunes, who’ll be bringing their unique electronic sound to the Workers Club.

Who we are:

Oh hey we’re Fortunes, a Melbourne R&B/Electronic duo made up of 2 handsome young men from NZ: Conor McCabe (vox), & Barnaby Matthews (production).

How we came together:

Conor explains: Barnaby and I both went to Hamilton Boys High School but didn’t know each other there, just knew of each other as he was 3 years above me. I knew him as this sick as drummer dude and he knew me as the little singer boy. I didn’t see him again until the first day I got to Melbourne in August last year when I had a coffee at the cafe where he worked. I saw him again weeks later at a house party and in my state i was all like “iiiii know youuuu”. He recognised me after i said i was the little singer boy from school and i ended up sitting on one of his mates laps and singing them Beyonce and D’Angelo.
A couple weeks later he sent me a beat to lay some shit down on.

I dug it and decided to cover Pink’s, “There You Go” on it. Pink was all up in my face at the time ’cause we had her pop-up store at my work and everyone was getting real over it being like “We hate pink, she sucks.” and I was like “Well yeah, she does have some pretty shitty songs these days but her old songs like from can’t take me home are mean as. and the videos, There You Go going into Most Girls with the motorbike, so good”. Doing that track was heaps of fun, we worked real well together, chillest vibes. After that Barnz made heaps of sick as new beats including the one for Keeper. He played them to me and I dug again and he asked me if i wanted to join him in Fortunes. “So keen”.

We Sound Like:

We sound like what Justin Timberlake would sound like if he was gay with A$AP Rocky and instead of having major label backing, he just smoked weed all day in North Melbourne.

We would love to play with:

Anyone with good vibes and/or mean dancing. Not real fussy haha.

We want you to listen to this song we made:
