Going behind-the-scenes on Alford Way with WA’s The Deenys

The Deenys

Last week saw WA indie rock band The Deenys release their impressive debut EP Alford Way.

Recorded across Sumo Sound Studios and Conor Lawson’s studio in Perth, Alford Way sees the expat rockers exploring a variety of pertinent and relatable themes, including young love, mental health struggles and disillusionment. The EP balances those potentially contrary themes well, with the band keen to show on their debut how diverse their music can be. And they’ve succeeded – putting out a strong debut EP that’s delivered with style and ably showcases their skills (and why they’ve racked up close to 90K streams on Spotify).

Alford Way boasts production credits from Dylan Adams (DMA’s, Skegss) and was mastered by RIDE’s Mark Gardener, with the band linking up with him after they supported RIDE at their Freo Social gig.

To celebrate the release of Alford Way the band have let us take an exclusive behind-the-scenes peek into the EP’s recording sessions:

The Deenys
“Everywhere, Nowhere” – Session 1 – Recording Day 2
Craig tracking drums for most of the morning, while the other boys kicked the footy in the car park and ate samosas from the Indian Grocer next door. Shane kicked our ball on the roof and a rescue operation involving a ladder and a broom ensued. Craig was blissfully unaware.

“Alford Way” – Recording Day 3
Posing while listening to drum mixes for the 77th time that day.

“Alford Way” – Recording Day 3
Tuning between takes.

“Vision of Heaven” – Recording Day 4
Gilly finds an old, dusty glockenspiel under the stairs of Sumo Sound Studio, and decided to add some sparkle to the outro.
