A large crowd was crammed into the Workers bandroom to watch local folktronic act Goodnight Owl launch the film clip for “Maps and Compasses”, taken from their recently released self titled EP. Supporting the band were a young group from Geelong called Sleep Decade.
Sleep Decade were a pleasant surprise with their pleasant blend of folk and experimental pop, which showcased a lyrical depth that belies the age of the players (vocalist Casey Hartnett gave a shout out to his parents to thank them for buying his current guitar for his 21st birthday, which is still six months off). They have a really pretty sound that is conveyed through the ambience and atmospherics created by the band, who were rather subdued onstage whilst performing with their energy focussed on the music. They are talented musician’s who have a knack for writing thoughtful, elegant tunes, that were enjoyable live. Keep an eye out for Sleep Decade, their set was a very promising effort that will improve with more live experience.
Goodnight Owl began their set with a screening of the clip for Maps and Compasses before launching straight into a couple of beautiful ambient tunes. Right from the opening number the band entranced the audience with their blend of electronic folk. Their sound is striking and intense, with Eddie Alexander and co. creating a heady atmosphere with their captivating stage presence. Eddie’s vocals were amazing live as the band switched between electronic heavy numbers and pretty laid back folk tunes. Highlights of the set were gorgeous renditions of “Maps and Compasses” and “Stale Bread”, an emotionally heavy song that rounded out the evening nicely.
Goodnight Owl are a phenomenal live act who give their all to the performance, which was simply stunning. If you’re not familiar with their work than keep an eye on the gig guides for upcoming shows, this is one band you need to see live.
