After almost eight long years, punk pioneers Green Day are finally coming back to Australia, and the excitement is real. 2020 saw the cancellation of their highly anticipated “Hella Mega Tour” due to COVID, leaving Aussie fans hanging. But now, with their “Saviors Tour” set to hit Australia early next year, Green Day are more than making up for lost time.
This isn’t just any tour—this time around, Green Day are celebrating two huge anniversaries. 2024 marks 30 years since their groundbreaking third studio album, Dookie, a pop-punk classic still highly regarded today. Written largely by frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, Dookie gave fans a raw insight into his life, with most tracks focusing on personal experiences. The lead single, “Basket Case,” remains their most-streamed song on Spotify.
On top of that, 2024 also marks 20 years since American Idiot, their politically charged album which is widely seen as a benchmark in the pop-punk genre. The album, which served as a social commentary on the political climate of the 2000s, remains just as relevant today. It was met with widespread critical acclaim and is ranked number 225 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
The band are currently on tour in North America with the likes of The Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid and The Linda Lindas, and according to our own Larry Heath, who caught the tour in Toronto, Canada, it was an epic event, telling us, “There was some six hours of live entertainment, with Green Day playing a three hour set filled with massive set pieces, every song off Dookie and American Idiot, plus fan favourites and tracks off their new album Saviors. Fans will not be disappointed – though no doubt exhausted by all the singalongs – with the band sounding as good as ever, showing no signs of slowing down. And on a sidenote: how has Billie Joe not aged!?”.
The band have confirmed that they’ll be performing both Dookie and American Idiot in full for their Australian tour, along with some of their other hits and a few new tracks. And if it’s anything like their shows in North America, they’ll be pushing close to 40 songs in their sets each night.
The Australian dates won’t be quite as packed with support acts as their North American run, however, but joining them on tour Down Under are Californian rockers AFI, who also haven’t played in Australia since 2017. Since their last visit Down Under, they released their eleventh studio album, Bodies, and have been consistently touring. Recently, they commemorated the twentieth anniversary of their 2003 record Sing The Sorrow by playing the album live in its entirety for the first time ever.
