Windwaker are one of our most exciting heavy metal acts, and today have released their debut album, Love Language.
They emerged out of Wagga Wagga, and now call Melbourne home. Their 2019 debut EP, Empire racked up millions of streams, and projected a buzz way beyond our domestic shores. Locally, they earned themselves recognition as a Triple J Unearthed Feature Artist.
Love Language explores the themes of love, and the aftershocks it can reap upon us all. The album is full of big hooks, adroit observations and massive choruses. They have jumped in boots and all, having written, produced and engineered the album themselves. The band is packed with talent.
Some of the festivals they have played at Download, Good Things, Knight & Day and Unify Festivals.
To celebrate the release of the album, the band has put together a playlist of songs that have inspired the album. So, do give the album a listen, then read on and give the playlist a spin. Trust me, you won’t find a more eclectic mix of tunes!
15 Songs That Inspired Love Language
“Axel F” – Crazy Frog
The intricate vocal textures paired with dynamic polyphonic gives birth to such a unique sound. We decided to make the intro of our song ‘Beautiful’ sound just like it. To be honest, there are crazy frog vibes the entire song.
“All Star” – Smash Mouth
The intricate vocal textures paired with melodic rock guitars gives birth to an epic sound. Kind of reminds me of Chad Kroeger’s song on Spider-Man ‘Hero’. “And they say that a hero will save us. I’m not gonna stand here and wait.” If you watch our music video for ‘Glow’ closely, you will notice similarities in the overall epicness of both songs. It’s mind blowing.
“Hero” – Chad Kroeger
This deserves its own honourable mention. The song just goes too hard. The ramen hair in the wind. The vocal texturing. The polyphonics. Breathtaking. Our song ‘Lucy’ has similar guitar tones in a few places. Listen closely.
“Hit It Back” – Diamond Construct
Insanely well “constructed” lyrics. Wildly underrated. The line that hits hardest for me is when the vocalist refers to someone (unspecified exactly) as “baby cakes”. That’s quite an interesting thing to say. Our song ‘Dopamine Freestyle’ is equally ignorant, but done more ironically. We win.
“That’s Life”- Frank Sinatra
Not much needs to be said about this one. It’s a classic. The title track of our ‘Love Language’ album draws inspiration from the tempo.
“I’m A Believer”- Smash Mouth
Huge song. If you’ve seen Shrek, you absolutely know what we’re talking about. Track 2 ‘Lucy’ on our album has similar vibes in spots.
“Sandstorm” – Darude
Took me years to find this song, but when I finally did, I was relieved to hear it. I remember scouring comment sections asking, nobody knew what I was talking about and they’d just Rick Roll me. Did my head in. Parts of ‘Beautiful’ sound like ‘Sandstorm’ for sure, and that’s mostly because Northlane started copying Darude as well, and it’s only natural for an Australian Metalcore band to follow their lead and plagiarise material also.
“Never Gonna Give You Up” – Rick Astley
Did not mean to Segway to this so quickly, but the vocals! The rich bass. Track 5 ‘Me + You, But Mostly Me’ on our album has a very similar vibe. Nice and groovy. Has that slow but bouncy quality that makes you wanna bop!
“Bop To The Top”- Ryan and Sharpay Evans
High School Musical. Hear me out. Full of bangers. Full of moments. Our album is also full of bangers, and it’s full of moments. Coincidence?
“4 da Trap” – 645AR
Our song ‘Dopamine Freestyle’ on the album has some trap bars like this. Honourable mention also goes out to Mario Judah. You the GOAT, bro.
“I Feel Good” – James Brown
Claps. Undeniable banger. Cry about it.
“Surrounded by Silence” – Design The Skyline
Never heard screamo like it. It’s half the reason we write bangers.
“Where The Hood At” – DMX
Hands are getting tired. I’ve typed quite a lot, but can push through this pain for this song. Goated, bro. GOATED! This song claps. Crazy. If you put this on the end of our album, it’d be almost seamless. This song has aged well.
“Smile” – Banks Arcade
Good friends of our’s. Good tunes. They belong in this list. We heard their music after we had already written the album, but listening to this song inspired the visuals for our new music videos. I have a condition called synesthesia.
“Walkin’ On The Sun” – Smash Mouth
What an insane journey this has been. It all comes full circle. This song is responsible for influencing every track on our upcoming debut album ‘Love Language’. Every time I hear it, I cry 1 single tear. Anyway, when’s pay day?
