Perth alt-metal act RinRin is filling a void in the local heavy scene with her fusion of J-rock and pop-punk. With frenetic guitarwork, stomping grooves and vibrant synths, her powerful vocals and catchy hooks soar high above the modern mixes.
RinRin and her band will be heading out on their debut headline tour this May with support from Inferiority Complex and Live Like Animals. The East Coast run will see them play intimate shows at Oxford Art Gallery in Sydney, Gasometer Hotel in Melbourne and King Lear’s Throne in Brisbane. Get your tickets to the Protagonist tour HERE.
We had a chat with RinRin about the tour and more so you can get to know her better.
Your music has an interesting blend of styles, combining heavy elements with electronics. How did the project come to exist?
I always loved metal music, grew up listening to and self-learning riffs from Slipknot, BabyMetal, John Petrucci, Joe Satriani, Orianthi, etc.; but at the same time loved listening and singing to K-pop, J-pop, Avril Lavigne, Barbie and Disney Soundtracks. When I started releasing tracks, I came to know more bands that I found really cool, like RedHook, One OK Rock, Maggie Lindemann, Yours Truly, etc. So, I thought most of the ideas are already there and all I need is to make it more coming from my heart.
The projects (singles and EPs) really came out of nowhere. Song ideas randomly will pop out of the blue and I will keep recording them in my phone and later create demos out of it in Logic. I will have at least a line-up of demos and decide which goes out first, or should an EP be released out of these four songs or so? In terms of electronic elements, perhaps the mix of music that I loved listening to kind of emerged in my creative vision when I decided what to add in my demo creation.
What are some of your main musical influences?
Bring Me The Horizon, BabyMetal, Poppy. I think they were the main influences musically, and Avril Lavigne is my inspiration when it comes to lyric writing.
Can you go through the story behind your latest single “WTF”?
There was a time when I had a lot of friends, but they disappeared in such a short amount of time, and I found myself with no one at all to call a friend. I’ve always wondered if I’m the one to blame and stuck with that idea, then WTF was born.
You recently announced the Protagonist Tour with Inferiority Complex and Live Like Animals, hitting the East Coast this May. What are you most excited about, and what can we expect from the shows?
We hadn’t actually planned for it to be honest. Although we did BIGSOUND and other gigs before, we all felt there is more work to be done with our stage performance. We decided to get help from Steven Canatelli last February and undergo the Band Coaching Program, which we completed. Then the Protagonist Tour was offered to us and what a great coincidence! We are so excited to be out there with guns blazing. Plus, we get to play three more unreleased tracks. And the bonus will be to meet the members of Live Like Animals and Inferiority Complex, as I have become a fan after listening to their stuff!
You’ve supported the likes of The Plot in You and RedHook, as well as scored a BIGSOUND showcase. Who is a dream act you would love to share the stage with?
The list will be long, but my top fives are BabyMetal, Avril Lavigne, Bring Me The Horizon, One OK Rock and Northlane.
Do you have anything else in the works for 2023 that you can tease with us?
Currently I’m writing more songs for my debut album. There will be three more single releases until the end of the year (including the one in May) and that’s it for now.
