In this day and age of digital media overload and home recording set-ups, every goose with garage band is uploading their tunes to MySpace and inflicting their angst upon the world, making it difficult for the true talents to stand out in a crowd of internet mediocrity. Locals King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard probably won’t have that problem, as they’ve chosen one of the most ridiculous, imposing and memorable band names to crop up in 2010. It helps, too, that they’re really fucking good.
The young lads are an unsigned super group of sorts, comprised of members from Revolver & Sun, The Houses and Goodnight Owl. These boys excel in the creation of experimental/lo-fi/psychedelic/rock jams that have an air of the 60’s garage scene, and have recently released a new single entitled Sleep/Summer, that is more fun than a barrel of monkeys.
The simple, catchy arrangements and miscellaneous vocal howls of “Sleep” are highly enjoyable and perfect to lose yourself in after a few beers on a hot summer’s afternoon. “Summer” follows in a similar vein of good old fashioned guitar rawk that is complimented by miscellaneous noise effects that are great for thrashing around on the dance floor.
The single is home made with love and sports some tripped out cover art that unfolds into a poster, you really can’t ask for better value than that. If you’re in Melbourne than be sure to catch their next round of live shows, having recently completed a successful residency at The Workers Club, that was chaotic, sweaty and endlessly fun, they are a very promising addition to the underground scene and it’ll be interesting to see what King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard get up to in 2011.
