Trophy Eyes wrapped up their epic regional tour with a bang last Sunday night at the Torquay Hotel, and what a time it was! They brought their buddies, Dear Seattle, along for the ride, and the entire night was a wild rollercoaster of energy and music. After dropping their killer fourth studio album, Suicide and Sunshine, earlier this year, the setlist was a tasty mix of their latest hits and some nostalgic oldies.
Dear Seattle kicked off the festivities, setting the mood with their cheeky charm and killer tunes. They had the already pumped-up crowd on their feet, belting out tracks from their latest album, Someday, and their freshest single, “Nothing’s Stopping Me Now.”
Trophy Eyes took to the stage bright and early at 9 pm, bursting into action with the infectious lead single from Suicide and Sunshine, “Blue Eyed Boy.” The crowd was instantly in the groove, with the front section of this cozy venue going nuts, setting the tone for the night. They followed up with the crowd-pleasers “Figure Eight” and “27 Club” before taking us on a nostalgic trip with the beloved classic “Heaven Sent.”
“Friday Forever” was an absolute firecracker, radiating so much energy that you couldn’t help but sing and dance along. Frontman John Floreani called out a few audience members for standing still with their hands in their pockets and urged every single person to dance and let loose- and this was a good move. His enthusiasm was downright contagious as he leapt, yelled, and grooved through the next set of tracks. The band was locked in, and their performance was off the charts. You could see the genuine joy on their faces, even if Floreani had a couple of moments struggling to hear himself.
During “Life In Slow Motion,” Floreani passed the mic to the crowd, and they flawlessly carried the chorus. The band beamed with massive grins, clearly blown away by the crowd’s enthusiasm. A definite highlight of the night was “On my way!” which had its live debut at the beginning of the regional tour. Floreani took a moment to share some heartfelt words, emphasising the importance of supporting Australian art and thanked everyone for “giving a fuck about Trophy Eyes.”
“Daydreamer” and “Chlorine” had everyone going wild, with a few brave souls hanging from the infamous Torquay Hotel rafters, and the entire room singing along. “You Can Count On Me” riled up the small but mighty crowd, and then the band took a trip down memory lane with the ultimate closer, “Bandaid.”
This was a truly special show, especially knowing that the band was so close to calling it quits prior to the release of Suicide and Sunshine. They made it clear that this is what they love to do- and this was reflected in the energy and pure joy they radiated. In the end, Trophy Eyes didn’t just close out their regional tour; they left their mark with a hurricane of energy and music that will echo in our heads for a long time.
