Lollapalooza kicked off its 10th anniversary at Chicago’s Grant Park in great form today, with thousands upon thousands of music fans streaming into the festival before the bands started at 11am. Its status as a premier festival is no doubt strong, but the calibre of Lollapalooza was loud and proud as well, with the beautiful surrounds of the park hosting huge stages and some larger names.
International bands and artists shone today, with the likes of Kodaline, Bombay Bicycle Club and Rudimental drawing impressive crowds. The ladies of Lolla also stole a large chunk of the spotlight; from Iggy Azalea‘s club-heavy tunes and choreography to CHVRCHES‘ Lauren Mayberry and Lykke Li‘s ethereal stage presences and of course, the haunting atmosphere Warpaint conjured up, this wasn’t a boys club by any means. The ladies stood their own.
One of the main clashes of the weekend for many was the two headline sets of the night by the Arctic Monkeys and Eminem. Situated at polar opposite ends of Grant Park, each had a solid crowd, though predictably it was Marshall Mathers who won out in the end, with a crowd stretching far back up to the park’s famous fountain.
Tomorrow will see Outkast headline with our own Cut/Copy and popular club hit maker Calvin Harris, who recently had Will Smith appear on stage with him at T in the Park – so it’s anyones guess what he has in store for us here. Aussies are stepping up even more too, with the likes of Vance Joy, the John Butler Trio and The Temper Trap all set to perform on some of Lolla’s larger stages. Stay tuned to the AU for full coverage, live from Chicago!
