Keeping travel dreams alive and setting goals has never felt more important. We can all agree that 2020 has been an unfortunate year so far, and almost every facet of daily life has been wrought by this ongoing global pandemic, the start of which now feels like forever ago. The arts has been one of the hardest hit areas, so The AU Review has kickstarted a Q&A series “looking past the pandemic”, encouraging creatives from around the world to share their travel hopes, dreams, and the thoughts or things that are getting them through 2020, while also highlighting essential experiences in their own country.
Slow Pulp (Chicago, USA)
Madison-bred, Chicago-based band Slow Pulp are gearing up for the imminent release of their new record Moveys, unleashing single “At It Again” which has been ripping its way through the blogosphere thanks to its potent throwback of 90s shoegaze threaded with power pop. Described as “Veruca Salt meets Mazzy Star, with a 90s college movie soundtrack feel to it”, the jam is all about being “back on your bullshit”, driving the idea home with a truckload of distortion and blistering drum fills. It’s a testament to vocalist Emily Massey that her piercing voice glides perfectly over the wide and rambunctious instrumental.
We caught with Slow Pulp to look past the pandemic.
When travel opens up completely, the first place we’re going is…
Hopefully Europe on tour.
Three spots in Chicago we think everyone should visit at least once in their life…
Red Hot Ranch, Schiller Woods, and Promontory Point in Hyde Park.
Whenever we have a visitor in my city and want to show them a good night out, the first place we take them is…
Danny’s Bar for dancing, then go to the Rainbo Club.
We’d end the night at…
Red Hot Ranch.
Most memorable thing we’ve eaten on the road…
Camping stove baked beans in a parking lot waiting for a tire replacement.
The one international venue we’ve always wanted to play…
Massey Hall in Toronto because it shares a name with Emily.
The one international destination we’re yet to visit but have always dreamed of…
The three things or thoughts that are getting us through this pandemic….
Our friends
Avatar the Last Airbender
Red Hot Ranch 😉
