Melbournian alt-pop group City Calm Down are known for new wave jams that induce long, thoughtful stares into the distance. Their latest offering is no different, “In This Modern Land” serving up a melancholy exploration of loneliness in the internet age. Frontman Jack Bourke’s bold baritone offers striking vocals, with the slow burning track building to an emotional peak.
The beautifully shot video, directed by Riley Blakeway, depicts the story of an isolated woman trying to find comfort in a virtual reality relationship. The haunting scenes feel as if pulled straight from a Black Mirror episode, and coupled with the lyrics of the song, the video forces you to consider your own use of technology. Is this where society is going?
