We’ve added another ten tracks to our Discovery Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including one song we exclusively premiered on the site earlier in the week. On this Valentine’s Day, “Premonition”, from Merpire, which is her self-described “horniest song yet”, is our Track of the Week.
It’s the first new song in four years from Naarm/Melbourne based multi-instrumentalist, artist and producer Merpire aka Rhiannon Atkinson-Howatt. It’s a lush dreamy take on that breathless, euphoric phase when you start crushing on someone hard. You can catch Merpire at the Brunswick Music Festival‘s At The Altar Of Us (Wednesday, 5th of March), an all ages night of queer songs and storytelling with the fabulous Ruby Gill and Porpoise Spit.
Husky Gawenda, frontman from Husky, has released “Silencio”, the first single from his upcoming third solo album, Storms. It features the beautiful vocals of Naarm’s Charm of Finches. Husky always raises the bar high with his beautifully constructed and delicate folk-rock, and when combined with Charm of Finches, it’s one to put on repeat. Husky has promised to release one track a month from the album, and will provide the background to the song on his substack. Head over there and subscribe.
“Last Night” is the new single from British singer-songwriter Yoshika Colwell. An exquisitely realised slice of folk, “Last Night” is the first taste of new music from Colwell since the release of This Weather, the collaborative EP she released with Vernon Spring in December. Beautiful, sedate vocals combine with a soundscape of harp and pedal steal and offer up this dreamy, ethereal delight. SXSW goers, Colwell is an offical SXSW artist, so make sure you keep an eye out next month!
Keeping with the folky and ethereal theme, this week we also have the release of “Mountains” – the new single from Naarm-based duo Oceanique. The duo is made up of twin sisters Maddy and Jess Houston – so you already know those harmonies are going to be tight. “Mountains” is the first new music from the duo since the release of their debut album Would The Light Hold Me in 2023. Minimally arranged, the focus is very much on the vocals here, and rightfully so. It’s a beautiful song, full of warmth and charm, and with a positive message as well.
Brisbane indie-rockers Beddy Rays are having a big week. They’ve released the catchy guitar-driven “Red Lights” and have also announced that their sophomore album will be released on the 18th of April. It features sweet jangly guitars, lovely harmonies and a positive message that life can be hard, but the good times are going to come. Check out the brilliant new western-themed video as well.
This week saw dreamscape artist Bellzzz announce the release of her forthcoming debut EP Dear Elizabeth – out March 28th. Accompanying the announcement is new single “Far Away” – a tender and slightly unsettling slice of alt-pop. Fingerpicked guitars, haunting synths, industrial flourishes and ethereal vocals combine to create a taut, atmospheric and cinematic soundscape.
“Hounds” from Perth-based singer/songwriter Darcie Haven is intimate and moving, and brilliantly captures the anxieties of early adulthood. “This song is about being trapped in a cycle of overthinking—where every decision, big or small, feels like life or death. It’s that relentless feeling of being chased by your own thoughts.”. It should find much love amongst fans of Phoebe Bridgers.
Also added to the playlist this week are “Not in Surrender”, the hedonistic new single from Obongjayar, and “Mega Circuit” the latest single from Japanese Breakfast. Finally, we’ve added “Just Another Life” from See Night, which we premiered earlier in the week.
