New Music Discoveries 14th July: Taylah Carroll, Lisa Caruso, Angie McMahon and more

For the first time this month we have a bumper update this week of fifteen new tracks added to our Discovery Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music; including three tracks we exclusively premiered.

Our Track of the Week is “Monogamy” the fantastic new single from Naarm/Melbourne singer-songwriter Taylah Carroll. The track, which was inspired by being on the “receiving end of infidelity” is from Carroll’s forthcoming new EP The After Party, which is out September 1st via [PIAS] Australia. It’s a powerful and empowering track, full of charm, and featuring some wonderfully introspective, sardonic and just down right cutting lyricism. That final couplet! We can’t wait to hear the rest of the EP.

Sydney’s Lisa Caruso is back with her first release of 2023 with “What If My Body Could Love Like You”. This is the first track from her soon to be released EP Stretching. With a new direction, moving into synths and keys, yet with the same emotive-driven vocals that move and delight, it’s another cracking tune from one of our finest singer/songwriters.

“Heaven” is the new single from Norwegian alternative R&B-soul singer-songwriter Beharie. The track is the latest release from his forthcoming debut album Are You There, Boy? Which is due to be released October 20th. “Heaven” is a beautiful slow burner, that builds from gentle guitar strums to something much more cinematic and sweeping.

Genesis Owusu continues to demonstrate his unbridled creativity, releasing “Tied Up!”, the second single from his forthcoming second album STRUGGLER, due out on 18th of August. The track has0 a pulsating funk beat, a rousing chorus and has a cracking video that shows Kofi fight and survive against his demons as a boxer character.

“Letting Go” from Angie McMahon demonstrates her maturity and gifted songwriting. The track is from her forthcoming album Light, Dark, Light Again  that will be released on the 27th October. Originally written as a piano ballad, “Letting Go” channels some Bruce Springsteen and Sam Fender vibes. Angie has announced gigs in Sydney and Melbourne on the 27th and 28th September respectively. Head HERE for ticketing details.

“Rewind” is the debut single from Meanjin and Eora singer-songwriter Allegra Neve. She’s been one to watch for a little while, having been awarded the Josh Pyke Partnership in 2021 and the Women in Music mentorship in 2022. According to Neve, the single is about “crippling social anxiety that can control what I do and when I do it”. And, that does come through in the track, musically there’s a wonderfully haunting and ominous soundscape, that really compliments Neve’s introspective lyricism and powerful vocal.

Meg Washington has released “Eastcoaster”, her first new track since her fabulous 2020 album, Batflowers. Showcasing Meg’s ability to keep switching things up, “Eastcoaster” has a country feel to it that of course showcases her incredible voice. In a big week of news for the artist, we’ve learnt that she is currently completing work on her fifth studio album, and is also working on a feature film adaptation of Paul Kelly’s “How To Make Gravy”, with her partner Nick Waterman.

“Hard Stare, Soft Touch” is the latest pop-punk bop from Melbourne’s Belle Haven. The track exposes superficial people in search of genuine connection. Its punchy verses and catchy hooks will have you dancing with your real friends. Meanwhile, Brisbane rockers Joy In Motion have made their long awaited comeback with “Wasting Away”. Simmering synths, bold keys and searing riffs build to a singalong chorus with a punchy breakdown.

Finally, we have exclusive premieres from The Golden Gaytimes, Down And Out and Bronte Alva.
