New Music Discoveries 15th March: Wisp, Night Tapes, Joe Mungovan and more

We have added another ten tracks to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including one single we exclusively premiered yesterday. 19-year-old up-and-coming shoegaze artist Wisp has grabbed our Track of the Week spot with her new single “Enough For You”.

“Enough For You” is another strong slice of moody, maximalist shoegaze from the enigmatic teenager, and comes fresh on the heels of the announcement that Wisp’s debut EP Pandora will be released early next month (April 5th). According to Wisp, the track “is about feeling undeserving for others because of how you perceive yourself due to insecurity and shame. The lyrics are from the perspective of a person who has contradicted themselves into believing the negative perception of their own is how everyone else views them as well.”

Wisp may only have a small back catalogue at the moment, with four previous singles, she’s been racking up the streams, with her debut single now having surpassed 40 million streams on Spotify. And, with each new release building on the last, it’s clear that Wisp is one to watch.

Brooklyn art-punk five-piece Gustaf have released “Close”, from their upcoming sophomore album, Package Pt. 2, due out April 5th. About the track they write: “This song is about wanting to hold onto something or someone that isn’t there, that age old pattern of opting for self delusional over the truth. It’s meant to capture that feeling of sitting next to someone and feeling like they’re a million miles away but still trying to drag them back to your side. Basically it’s an exploration of the nasty and controlling side of insecure attachment and denial.”

“every day is a game” is the beautiful new single from London-based dream pop trio Night Tapes. The track sees the trio really leaning into their dream pop credentials. Think ethereal vocals, reverb aplenty and a delightfully relaxed, yet romantic vibe. Meditative and soothing, it’s perfect for easing into the weekend and shrugging off the worries of the working week.

Montreal’s alt-pop artist dee holt has released the super sultry and catchy “make a move”, a tune that will stay in your head all day.

The Splendour in the Grass lineup has dropped this week, and one act we were excited to see was Lizzy McAlpine. This week she released “I guess”, from her third studio album, Older, which will drop on the 5th of April. It’s a personal and melancholic track which hits hard. “I’ll tell a lie just to bring you home”, is a lyrical snippet, with plenty more which grab your focus.

Today Joe Mungovan has released his sophomore album, Sugar, Candy, Lips. The focus track on the album is “High”, a totally seductive and smooth banger, showcasing his versatility. Joe has been steadily releasing new music the last couple of years, proving himself to be one of our most exciting singer/songwriters. Do give the rest of the album a listen. It’s a corker.

“Soft Entrance” is the debut single from Norwegian singer-songwriter Silje Steine’s debut album Open Up, which will be released in August. The album is described by Steine as a concept album, designed to turn repressed thoughts and feelings into music. In that vein “Soft Entrance” explores ideas of vulnerability, and what Steine describes as the “bittersweet dance between the desire for connection and the fear of being hurt again.” It’s a truly beautiful track which just exudes this a softness and warmth that’s endearing, but also belies the power lying just beneath the surface.

Finally, we have an exclusive single premiere from Kaiyah Mercedes (“If We Never Speak Again”).
