The end of the year is in sight (yikes!), and this week we have added twelve tracks in a bumper-packed addition to our Discovery Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. Along with two singles we exclusively premiered earlier in the week, we also have “Some Kind of Control”, our Track of the Week from Naarm/Melbourne-based artist Ruby Gill.
This is the first single from Ruby since her stellar 2022 debut album I’m Gonna Die With This Frown on My Face. It’s a gorgeous slice of intimate and introspective musings on what it feels to be simultaneously in and out of control. When Ruby Gill sings, you can’t help but be drawn into her beautiful imagery. Ruby will be performing in Sydney on Thursday the 21st November at The Trocadero Room, before heading off to New Zealand. Head to her website for all the details.
“Laila” is the latest single from Australian singer-songwriter Evie Irie – her first for 2024. Recorded in Sydney with GRAMMY and ARIA award winning producer Eric J. Dubinsky, “Laila” is a vibrant, beautiful and sophisticated pop song that was initially written as an 18th birthday present for Irie’s best friend, the eponymous Laila. Full of charm and warmth, with some stunning falsettos, confessional lyricism, and perfectly pitched production there’s so much to admire and enjoy about this one.
Sydney/Dharawal based rock outfit Magic Machine are back with a new single – the delightful “Pieces Of My Brain”. The single sees the band, very much channeling their inner 60s garage rock band, with plenty of whammy bent guitar, trilling organs, and reverb drenched vocals. We’re big fans of a bit of a surf rock here at the AU and this really hits the spot. There’s even a charming lo-fi music video to go along with it. The band are also making their way up and down the East Coast over the next few weeks so make sure you check them out. More information can be found HERE.
“Two Step Plan” is the first new release from Hollie Col since her fabulous Julia Stevens EP. Hollie is currently touring Europe, supporting another AU favourite, Kim Churchill – head to her website for all the dates.
“Holy Communion” is the latest single from Derry melodic punk trio Parker. The track is billed as a ‘Star-Crossed lovers anthem’ and follows on from the standalone singles “Eleanor” and “Generic Indie Bands” released earlier in the year. “Holy Communion” sees the band channeling their pop-punk/emo side – it’s upbeat, infectious and that right amount of raucous. According to singer and guitarist Dylan Bradley, the track is a “love song addressing a romantic relationship between two people from two different cultural backgrounds in Northern Ireland.” For our UK and Irish readers the band are on tour for the rest of November. Tour dates and tickets can be found HERE.
Noonzy, the solo project of Antwerp-based musician Arnaud Stockbroekx, has released “Where/When”, a fun and infectious take on the joy of falling in love with strangers, and dreaming of this imagined romance. Showing his all-round skills, Noonzy played most of the instruments himself.
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and producer Specific Coast released his new single “Eastside” this week. It’s a gentle, acoustic slice of indie-folk that explores the evolving nature of relationships and friendships in adulthood. It’s tender, full of warmth and for those of us of a certain age increasingly relatable.
Also added to the playlist this week are new tracks from Melbourne singer-songwriter Ed Hawke (“Bear”), London-based artist Memory of Jane (“Praying I Don’t Fall”) and Gadigal Land’s DOWNGIRL (“HORSEGIRL”).
Finally, we’ve added two premieres from earlier in the week, from John Calvin (“Rest of My Roads”) and Sarah Kabbani (“Losing You”).
