New Music Discoveries 16th February: Highline, Jet City Sports Club, Sahara Beck and more

We have added ten more tracks to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. This week, our Track of the Week is “”Believe Me I’ll Run” — from Sydney’s Highline.

Highline are known for their high-energy guitar-infused indie-rockers, and “Believe Me I’ll Run” is a little more melancholic than their more recent releases. It’s a beautiful and heartfelt song, uplifting and positive with passionate vocals that are sweet and joyful. There are no empty platitudes here.

Lead singer Sam Rigney writes about the track “Unlike a lot of our songs we’ve made in the past, this song offers up a bit of hope as opposed to being down about a situation. It felt good to write a song with positive notes that had some happy memories attached to it.”

It’s been a big week for the band, as they’ve also announced that their long-awaited debut album is just around the corner. Shapes We Figure Out will be released on the 12th of April, and the songs are shaped by the band members in their early twenties, a formative time for self-discovery. A tour of the East-coast is promised for mid-April, so keep an eye out for dates.

Eora/Sydney indie band Jet City Sports Club released their new single “Sunny Morning” earlier this week, announcing their forthcoming sophomore EP Every Single Dream (Out March 28th). Recorded with producer Fletcher Matthews, “Sunny Morning” is a shot of sonic serotonin and a bright and carefree ode to summertime. It’s basically just three and a half minutes of joy – can’t go wrong with that surely?!

It’s always a thrill to get the debut release for an artist, and Naarm/Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Gypsy Lee’s “I Realised You Lied When You Said I Was No One” is a formidable entry.

The track features incredible vocals from Gypsy with a soulful melody sung with a piano. The song provides hope for those in a difficult relationship. Gypsy provides some worldly advice: “I really wanted to write not only about the experience of being stuck in a situation that feels like there is no escape, but also the cheat codes for the escape room”.

There’s an old-school maturity to the vocals and delivery, which should appeal to fans of Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish and Florence. No doubt we will hear plenty more from Gypsy in 2024.

“Too Good to Be True” is the new single from West Australian singer-songwriter Siobhan Cotchin, released to coincide with her national arena tour supporting Matchbox Twenty and Goo Goo Dolls. The vulnerable and poignant track was written in collaboration with fellow WA songwriter Tim Nelson and sees Cotchin striking a fine balance between her competing rock and pop sensibilities. Big emotions call for a big sound and Cotchin nails it and then some – you’ll be singing along in no time.

Sahara Beck is currently on a national tour (her show at the Vanguard last night was apparently exceptional), and this week she has released “Special”, a poignant and powerful testament to the challenges faced by musicians trying to earn a living in a fickle industry. It’s  heartbreakingly honest, and a salient reminder to get out there and support your favourite artists.

There are still shows in Wollongong (tonight), Belgrave, Prahan, Northbridge, Bunbury and North Fremantle to come. Head to Sahara’s website for details of the remaining shows on her tour.

Les Amazones d’Afrique, formed in Mali in 2014, are a creative collective of female artists from across Africa and the diaspora. Musow Danse, released today, is their third album and sees the group working with renowned pop producer Jacknife Lee and drawing inspiration from hip-hop, trap, and electronic music. The empowering “Kuma Fo (What They Say)”, which was released as a single late last year, really encapsulates what the collective is all about with five members of the collective singing in their native languages about women’s freedom of expression, about speaking up, and seizing that power. It’s a strong and important message delivered in real style.

Finally, we have two tracks that we premiered this week, from Aaron Thomas (“Mouth of the City” ) and Grand Casual (“Fine” ).
