We have added another ten new tracks to our Discovery Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. This week our Track of the Week goes to “Minimalism” the new single from long time AU favourite Daphnie.
Written and produced in collaboration with Harry James, “Minimalism” is the first single from what will be Daphne’s sophomore EP. Its release comes hot on the heels of an ADHD diagnosis and the aim is for the song to give listeners a glimpse into how Daphnie perceives the world. So there’s a lot of, as he describes it, “random ear candy… and generally flirty fluttery sounds”.
It also happens to be a banger of an alt pop tune delivered at a rapid fire pace, full of quirky-yet-insightful little lyrical moments and naughties vibes. It’s the best yet from the rising Sydney star.
“Ultraviolet” is the latest single from Melbourne indie rock trio Des Cortez, and sees them exploring a more sophisticated sound. Lyrically the song explores the excitement and giddiness of a new relationship, and is paired with rich and warm vocals, catchy harmonies and some delightfully jangly guitar work. The band has been getting a reputation for their live sets, and you’ll be able to find out for yourself at Melbourne’s Curtin Hotel on May 25th.
Full Flower Moon Band has proven themselves to be one of the most electrifying live acts in the country. They are back with “Devil,” a snarling blues-infused atmospheric trip. The band is currently tearing it up in the UK and will be performing at The Great Escape in Brighton late this week.
Also treading the stages in Brighton this week are Brisbane/Meanjin garage-rock outfit Platonic Sex. It’s their first single since last year’s hype building trilogy of singles which included fan favourites “Melon” and “Bitch In The Heat”. The track, which leans more to the ethereal and delicate, was inspired by a summer storm that triggered a bout of nostalgia. Beautiful and emotive!
“Little Chaos” is the punchy new single from Dublin-born London-based artist Orla Gartland – their first of 2024. It’s a high energy, infectious ‘love song’ which is full of swagger despite its undercurrent of vulnerability. It’s bold, brash, and bursting with life; and hopefully the first of much more new music from Gartland in 2024.
This week also sees GIMMY sharing “Fall On Me”, the final single from their forthcoming debut album Things Look Different Now – due May 31st (Pre-order the album on vinyl HERE). The previous singles from the album showcased the raucous and energetic new wave and post-punk sides of the album; whereas “Fall On Me” sees GIMMY revealing a more emotive and vulnerable side — that said, it’s not without its power come the chorus.
Sydney indie-pop quartet GRXCE is also back this week with “Someday” — a reflective singalong about having hope for the future. Brooding synths and washed-out drums elevate the pained, honest vocals over picked acoustic guitar.
Also added to the playlist this week are new tracks from Allday with Cub Sport, Adelaide-based punk rockers Nocturnal Animals and SLIM JIMZ, who’s video for “R.I.P.” we premiered earlier in the week.
