New Music Discoveries 19th January: Morgan Harper-Jones, Laena Myers, Hollow Coves and more

We’re back from our summer break with ten new tracks for our Discovery Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including one where we exclusively premiered the music video.

Our first Track of the Week for 2024 is “Alone With You” the next single from Manchester singer-songwriter Morgan Harper-Jones’ forthcoming debut album Up To The Glass – due March 22nd via Play It Again Sam.

“Alone With You” is an intimate, almost diaristic track, with its candid and confessional exploration of emotions whilst finding oneself. The track also features two-time Ivor Novello Award-winner Iain Archer on production duties and with a co-write credit. You’ve also got friend Sam on the pots and pans.

It’s a beautiful track, with some sublime vocals and quirky instrumentation, that’s all about “longing for someone who is probably a massive walking red flag…” Which is obviously prime songwriting material! Though we have to say songs about suss potential partners have rarely sounded as good.

Laena Myers might be better known for her work as lead singer, songwriter and guitarist of FEELS, and she is close to releasing her debut solo album, LUV (Songs Of Yesterday). Her latest single to be released is “Bouquet”, which is a gorgeous and lush slice of indie-folk. It’s beautifully intimate, just Laena and her guitar, with strings coming in for an extended outro.

Anyone who is a fan of Laura Marling, Hope Sandoval and Aldous Harding will find much to love here. We’re looking forward to the release of the album, out on the 23rd February.

Gold Coast’s Hollow Coves have announced their sophomore album – Nothing to Lose – with feel-good new single “Photographs”. The track came about after reminiscing with Matt Corby (who is on production duties) about the lost art of physical photography and as a nod towards member Matt Carins’ mother who kept a photo album for him since he was born. The track is full of all the warmth, tenderness and charm you would expect from a Hollow Coves record – a much needed injection of good vibes!

UK indie-rockers Sea Girls are about to head out on their Australian tour, and this week released “I Want You To Know Me”, the new single from their forthcoming album, Midnight Butterflies (out 14th June ). A pulsating beat, ripping guitars and soaring vocals, this is bound to be an absolute belter when played live.

Their tour kicks off at the Oxford Art Factory on the 24th January – head here for ticket details. Next time they come to Australia they won’t be playing in such intimate venues.

“Dizzy” is the new single from Sprig, the indie-pop project of Austin singer-songwriter Hannah Stomski. “Dizzy” is the first introduction of Sprig’s sophomore EP which is due this year and follows her 2019 debut Songs for Sleep. It’s a dreamy, soothing single with a beautiful vocal and some delightfully woozy instrumental. Very much one for fans of The Japanese House, Lucy Dacus, Slow Pulp or Elliot Smith.

TORRES is the recording project of New York artist Mackenzie Scott and “Wake To Flowers” is a single from her forthcoming album, What an enormous room, out next Friday (26th January). Pulsating basslines, reverb guitars and emotive vocals. One for fans of PJ Harvey. More please.

Naarm alt-rock trio Okay Dane return with “Interstellar Nihilist”, a dreamy singalong for the socially-stranded millennial. Steady grooves and sardonic lyrics make this cut ideal for shower thought sessions and midnight drives alike.

Finally, we have the debut video from Chloe Sea, which we premiered earlier in the week.
