New Music Discoveries 19th July: Full Flower Moon Band, BATTS, Meg Washington and more

We’ve added another ten tracks to our Discovery Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including one song we exclusively premiered on the site earlier in the week. “Enemy”, the focus track from MegaFlower, the new album released today from Meanjin/Brisbane’s Full Flower Moon Band, is our Track of the Week.

It’s the third album from the band, and it feels as though it’s about to become their time in the sunshine. They built a solid fanbase in Meanjin, before the secret was out and they started touring outside their home state. We caught them recently at The Great Escape in Brighton, and they went down a storm. Their music is explosive rock, with serene and melancholy moments thrown in. With ‘Babyshakes’ Dillon on lead vocals, they are captivating live. If you seem them live once, they will be on your ‘must see’ list forever moving forward.

Melbourne-based singer-songwriter BATTS is all set for a busy second half of 2024. Anyone following her socials will known there’s the arrival of a baby BATTS imminently, and now she’s just announced that her third album – Just My Luck – is set for release on October 18th. Teasing that album is her latest single “Crisis”, which is out everywhere today.

The single, BATTS’ second for the year, is about ‘a broken relationship on the brink of complete destruction and the realisation of needing to leave.’ It has all the hallmarks of a classic BATTS track — beautiful vocals, heartbreaking lyricism, and instrumentation and arrangements that are just perfectly judged to carry the song’s message with that extra emotional punch.

The multi-faceted Meg Washington is back with “Honeysuckle Island”, the first taste from her upcoming fifth album, due to be released in 2025. As always, her voice is extraordinary on the track, and it’s packed with emotion. It’s beatifully evocative, with vivid imagery. Do we really have to wait until next year to hear the rest of the album?

“My Old Friend John” is the new single from Pa Sheehy, the former frontman of Irish rock band Walking on Cars. The track, which will appear on Sheehy’s debut album Maybe It Was All For This, is a half whispered, half plucked heartbreaker. It’s a proper story song, with Sheehy exploring themes of love, friendship, sobriety, despair and helplessness. But, delivered with such warmth and poise.

BLOKBSTR is a new indie rock/dance trio based out of Eora/Sydney and are gearing up to release their debut EP in September. “July” is the latest track to drop. It’s a soundtrack to carefree days in our late teens and early twenties ” “Looking for lights / living our lives / Running through cities / Losing our minds”. They have announced a run of shows in Newcastle, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne in August and September. Head to their website for more details.

“When You Call” is the latest taste of Greta Stanley’s forthcoming third album, which is due for release in September. Recorded in Townsville with producer Adib Parker “When You Call” is an evocative and empowering slice of alternative pop. According to Stanley, the song ‘is about a love that showed up when you didn’t expect it to, when you’ve been burnt, and you’ve had to push to be noticed or constantly second guessing in the past.’ Dramatic, expressive and sophisticated, there’s a lot to love here.

Also added to the playlist this week is “certainty” the latest collaborative track from South London-based songwriter and producer piglet, this time with Tiberius b. There’s also “Don’t Mind Me”, the beautiful new single from Award-winning Australian folk artist Ernest Aines. Sofi Tukker has released “Hey Homie”, featuring her gorgeous soft vocals, telling the story of falling in love with someone that you know is unattainable.

Finally, we premiered a video for Lucy Gallant (“Devious”).
