New Music Discoveries 1st December: Helly, TISM, Teenage Dads and more

It’s officially December. It’s officially summer. The countdown to Christmas is well and truly on, and we have ten more tracks to add to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including two exclusive single premieres.

And, whilst it may be the start of summer we’re taking you to snowy Sweden with our Track of Week – “Dancing For You Tonight” from Stockholm-based artist Helly. The single is the first to be release from Helly’s debut album Side Effects, which is set for release December 14th.

According to Helly, the single is “about the dark night after a breakup, leaving your old life behind, like stepping out from a train into an abandoned town all alone. Stray animals scouring around, haunting memories breathing down your neck and all you can do is to ride it out through the night, just dance and hope for another day.”

It’s engaging single and frankly it’s just a whole vibe, with some fantastic vocals, ‘breathy’ flourishes and some quirky instrumentation to boot. But, it’s also full of warmth and ultimately it’s a really good pop song. One for the fans of Regina Spector, Ane Brun and more.

Also added to the playlist this week is “Common Walls (The Housemate Song)”, the latest single from Fremantle indie folk artist Chloe Schofield. The single is inspired by Schofield having to endure sleepless nights due to a housemate’s nocturnal Tinder escapades. So, as you can expect there is some wonderfully candid and pointed lyrics that’ll you’ll like relate to if you’ve ever had to house/flat share. According to Schofield the track is a favourite live and it’s not hard to imagine why.

We’ve been massive fans of Scotland’s The Snuts since we caught them at Splendour in the Grass in 2022. Killer songwriting, catchy melodies and a great live show had us hooked. They’ve announced that their third studio album, Millennials, will be released on the 23rd February 24, and have released a new single, “Deep Diving”.

Of the track, lead singer lead singer Jack Cochrane writes, “‘Deep Diving’ is a raw exploration of our mortality, the ticking clock of our lives and the consequences of being caught in the maze of one’s own mind.”.

“Hard Times” is the timely new single from London songwriting duo Ooberfuse and a full throated defence of homeless rough sleepers in light of recent prejudicial comments from politicians in the UK. The track, which also enlists the help of Hip Hop royalty Snoop Dogg, aims to shine a light on actual lived experiences of homelessness. With that in mind, the band have also teamed up with homeless film director David Fussell who features in the music video for the single. Ooberfuse have also stated that any proceeds from the single will go to charities which work directly with homeless people to help them through the winter.

Yes, those irreverent rockers TISM are back, with their first single in twenty years. They haven’t lost any of their ability to shock with “I’ve Gone Hillsong”. They’ve skilfully managed to offend great swathes of folk; most of them arguably deserve it. There’s a video to go along with it, and today they have dropped news that there will be three East Coast mainland shows in early 2024. Head here to sign up for details about all things TISM.

Teenage Dads continue to shine with their latest track, “Tale of a Man”. Fresh from taking out the 2023 Michael Gudinkski Breakthrough Artist ARIA Award, their latest single is breezy and infectious. They are stretching their musical chops on this, and it has  a Vampire Weekend swagger go it. 2024 will be a big year for the band, as they head to Laneway as well as Party in the Paddock in Tasmania.

Finally, we have two exclusive premieres from Lars Nagel (“Now That You’ve Left Me”) and Just A Leo (“I Promise).
