New Music Discoveries 1st March: Tyne-James Organ, St. Vincent, The Avett Brothers and more

We’re launching into March with ten more songs added to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including two singles we exclusively premiered earlier in the week. Australian alt-rock artist Tyne-James Organ has released his first new music of 2024, the single “All On Me” and it’s our Track of the Week.

“All On Me” is from Organ’s forthcoming new album and was recorded in Byron Bay with producer Chris Collins. The captivating song portrays Organ’s mother’s perspective as she navigates a tragic moment; with the emotive and pulsating saxophone symbolising her tears.

According to Organ, “This song is all about my mum, as if she is singing every single word. Everything is all on my mum. Everything. She picks every piece up. She does it all… The sax solo was inevitable with this one. I’ve always dreamed of having a saxophone on one of my songs…”

It’s obviously a very personal song, and a beautiful one at that, which helps cement Tyne-James Organ as one of Australia’s next generation of stars. Make sure you check out the accompanying music video as well.

“Not Divine” is the new single from Queenie, the ‘trash queen alter-ego’ of Melbourne musician Eloise Thetford. The stunning and fiery new single follows the recent collaboration with Henry Wagons on “Big City Blues” which was released in January 2024. According to Queenie, “Not Divine” is about ‘being put on a pedestal and idolised in a relationship when really, I’m not some divine being; I’m human.’ There’s a taut intensity to the track, a fierceness that’s just about contained; but the main draw here is Queenie’s vocal – a captivating blend of vulnerability and power.

The incredible St. Vincent is back with “Broken Man”, the lead single from her seventh studio album, All Born Screaming, to be released on the 26th of April. With Dave Grohl on drums,  the track builds into a raging inferno; it’s an emotive, visceral masterclass. Check out the video as well.

This week saw Americana royalty The Avett Brothers announce their first album in five years. Produced by longtime collaborator and friend Rock Rubin the self-titled/untitled album will be released on May 17th via Ramseur Records/American Recordings/Thirty Tigers. Accompanying the announcement is lead single “Love Of A Girl”. Though for those more familiar with The Avett’s folkier and rootsier sound the short and scrappy ‘rock n roll’ blast of the new single may come as a bit of a surprise.

Katy Steele is on a roll. Only last year did she release her fabulous solo album, Big Star, and yesterday she dropped “Broken”, the first single off a new EP, due in June.

About the track, Katy writes:  Broken unintentionally has always reminded me of Carly Simon’s classic ‘You’re So Vain’. The lyrics are straight up, a little like myself. It was inspired by some of my personal experiences of heartbreak during my years in New York. Like all my songs though, there tends to be more than one pivotal subject within the song, so I will leave it up to my listener’s own interpretations.”

Katy is currently touring, playing at The Chapel in Prahan tomorrow night, then hitting Sydney, Brisbane and Fremantle – check her website for details. She is always great live, so do get along if you can. Support live music.

Also added to the playlist this week is “One Glass” the latest single from Glasgow singer-songwriter Murdo Mitchell. Taken from Mitchell’s forthcoming EP, “One Glass” is a charming slice of indie-folk that’s full of smart lyricism, emotive vocals and a good ear for a hook and melody.

We’ve also got two exclusive premieres this week; Lucy’s Disorder (“Tell Me a Secret”) and Steve Baskin (“Do What You Wanna Do”).
