We’ve slipped into November and are barrelling towards Christmas at an alarming speed. In between gorging on leftover Halloween treats we’ve added ten more tracks to our Discovery Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. Along with two singles we exclusively premiered earlier in the week, we also have “Only A Fool”, our Track of the Week and the brand new single from Melbourne five-piece Delivery.
“Only A Fool” is the latest single to be released from the band’s forthcoming sophomore album – Force Majeure, which is set for release on January 17th via Heavenly Recordings. “Only A Fool” is frankly a lot of fun, replete with some delightfully nonchalant vocals and a captivating gonzo dynamism that allows each member getting a moment to shine across the track’s run time. It also features the band’s only ‘jam-out’ ending to date.
“Stop Calling” from JACOTÉNE is yet another example of why we are so excited about this rising artist. We were blown away by her at 2023 Laneway, and this winner of 2022’s triple j Unearthed High competition nails it with each release. This track is a defiant anthem exploring the thrill of independence and self-assurance.
About the track, JACOTÉNE writes “”Stop Calling’ talks about a desire to break free from a toxic connection. The song is about the frustration and empowerment you feel in the face of a dishonest or manipulative relationship. It’s a situation where you’ve given another person multiple chances, but the lies and manipulation continue. It’s a song about independence and a refusal to be drawn back into an unhealthy dynamic”. Again, her incredible voice is to the fore – powerful, gritty and soulful.
Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland indie group Coast Arcade also returned this week with their new single “City Limits”. The single, which follows the release of “Baited” earlier in the year continues the band’s rise. It’s all about those classic rock tropes – dreaming of breaking free and exploring new opportunities elsewhere. “City Limits” is big, bold, and full of energy. There’s a real sense of swagger and confidence here too, it very much feels like a statement of intent from the four piece cementing them as one to watch.
Davey Lane is back with “God, I’m Fucked Up Over You”, the first single from his forthcoming fourth solo album, Finally, A Party Record , due in 2025. One of our most-loved songwriters and musicians, Davey reminisces about a love-lost and the pains of coming to terms with it. It’s always great to see solo material from Davey, when he isn’t busy with his beloved You Am I, or guesting with the likes of Crowded House, Rundgren, Robyn Hitchcock, Jimmy Barnes, Masters’ Apprentices and so many others.
“Nobody’s Perfect” is the new bedroom pop single from British act Tokyo Tea Room. It’s ethereal, a little woozy, and delivered with this relaxed and unhurried manner that just really helps pull the listener in. Throw in some beautiful and airy vocals and we’re onto a winner here.
“This Time” from alt-country duo Ally Row opens with sweet harmonica, and we were hooked from there. With beautiful acoustic guitars this ode to two childhood friends reuniting and declaring their love for one another is delightful. Reminiscent of Neil Young, Bob Dylan and James Taylor, “This Time” is steeped in nostalgia.
Also added to the playlist this week we head to Europe with new tracks from Swedish pop artist Boy in Space (“Too Much to Lose”) and Swiss pop artist Boy Amor (“Out Of My Mind”).
Finally, we have two premieres from earlier in the week, from Mid Drift (“Nicotine”) and Fingerless (“Monster”).
