New Music Discoveries 20th May: Alex the Astronaut, James Vincent McMorrow, Soccer Mommy and more

We’ve added ten more tracks to our Discovery playlist on Apple Music and Spotify. This week, our Track of the Week is “Haircut” from Alex the Astronaut. The single, which is bubbling with positivity and joy, is from Alex’s forthcoming album How To Grow A Sunflower Underwater which is out July 22nd. Danceable and joyful, “Haircut” is a celebration of personal growth, self discovery and friendship.

Joining Alex on the playlist are Irish singer-songwriter James Vincent McMorrow and GRAMMY-nominated US artist Soccer Mommy; both have new albums on the way on June 24th. “Hurricane”, the latest from McMorrow is another joyful addition to the playlist, with choral backing vocals, horns, and McMorrow’s trademark soulful and heartfelt vocal.

“Bones” is quintessential Soccer Mommy. Originally written for a rom-com, Sophie Allison loved it so much she couldn’t let it go, keeping it for her forthcoming album. According to Allison “it’s a song about struggling with the parts of yourself that you don’t like in a relationship… It’s about wanting to become better for someone and feeling like you’re standing in your own way.”

This week we’re also spotlighting new tracks from some lesser-known Australian artists. “Disappear” is the title track from the new EP from Brisbane indie rockers The Valery Trails. The COVID-19 pandemic meant for the first time in several years, all three members of the band were in the same city, so they hit the recording studio running. “Disappear” taps into that recognisable Brisbane sound, with plenty of jangly guitars, hooks, and quality vocals.

Bend The West is the new pop music project from writer and instrumentalist Oliver Iacono. “Opportunity Will Find You In The End” is taken from the project’s recently released EP Nobody Wants To Read The Prophecy. It’s playful, undeniably retro, and captivating in its own unique way.

Rounding out the playlist are new tracks from Marlon Williams (“My Boy”), Leeds singer-songwriter Jake Whiskin, New Zealand born, US based singer-songwriter Estella Dawn, French newcomer Epsilon and US singer-songwriter Marie-Claire Evans.
