Another ten tracks have been added to our Discovery playlist on Apple Music and Spotify, including two singles we exclusively premiered earlier in the week. Our Track of the Week is “Desert Land” from acclaimed singer-songwriter and producer Matt Corby.
“Desert Land”, a stand-alone track, comes fresh off the back of the release of Corby’s ARIA Award-nominated third album Everything’s Fine. The single was written by Corby alongside frequent collaborators Chris Collins and Nat Dunn, continuing a creative partnership that flourished whilst working on Everything’s Fine.
Corby seems to have found himself in a bit of a creative sweet spot; and “Desert Land” really does show off his skill as an artist and a songwriter. Despite its perhaps heavy subject matter, “Desert Land” is a bright, blissful and utterly soulful slice of indie-pop that’s just a joy to listen to.
Sydney’s Imogen Clark is back with a bang with “If I Want In”, a searing and triumphant celebration of courage and resilience. Imogen has had quite the journey, from playing covers in Western Sydney pubs to laying down the track at the iconic Abbey Road Studio 3, where The Beatles recorded their Revolver and Abbey Road albums.
Helping out on the track were guitarist Jung Kim, bassist Max Dunn and drummer Donnie Borzestowski from the legendary Gang of Youths. She also roped in the incredible Georgia Maq from Camp Cope to add some vocals.
As if recording in the same studio as The Beatles and Pink Floyd isn’t mind-blowing enough – Imogen played the iconic Mrs. Mills piano at Abbey Road. Yes, the same piano that Paul McCartney played on songs such as “Lady Madonna”, “Penny Lane” and “With A Little Help From My Friends”.
“If I Want In” is the first single from her upcoming album, due early in 2024. In the meantime, Imogen is continuing her year-end Holiday Hootenanny tradition in Melbourne (9th December) and Sydney (23rd November) with some star-studded guests. Check out her website for further details.
“Fallen For” is the new single from West Australian rising star Darcie Haven and comes fresh on the heels of a guest feature on Holy Holy’s new record Cellophane and “Heroes”. There is a delicate earnestness to “Fallen For” that is just so compelling. Delivered with warmth and tenderness “Fallen For” perfectly captures feelings of early love. Or as Haven describes it: “I wanted to capture the feeling of meeting someone and the world turning into techni-colour.” Sounds like mission accomplished to us!
Keeping things on the West Coast, “Dance The Night Away” is the debut single from Fremantle artist Shannon Smith. The track is described as a “toast to the first flush of romance”, so perhaps unsurprisingly the vibe here is undeniably joyful and upbeat. Whilst this is Smith’s debut release, it is pretty clear he’s a seasoned performer. “Dance The Night Away” is delivered with all the confidence of someone who can command an audience.
“You Make Me Sick” is the first release from Carla Wehbe since her breakout EP, Jupiter and Mars, released earlier this year.
Carla has a gift for creating brilliant melodies, lyrics that stick in your mind, and has an authenticity to her that is truly exciting. There’s no doubt that she is destined for a much larger audience.
“You Make Me Sick” is an angsty take on dealing with anxiety, though it can just as easily be applied to your nemesis. Either way, it rocks. Carla has some headline shows in late October and November in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. Head to her website for more details.
Adelaide indie-rockers Stormy-Lou celebrate their neurodiverse community in their new single, the self-deprecating singalong “Impulsivity”. Delicate vocals and layered guitars meld with upbeat rhythms as the wry lyrics paint a day in the life with ADHD.
Also added to the playlist this week are new singles from Swedish-Colombian artist Samson for President and American multi-instrumentalist and composer Hani Abadi (Bilocate).
We’ve also tracks from SOULSLEEP and Chelsea Elder for exclusive premieres earlier in the week.;
