New Music Discoveries 21st February: PEPTALK, Sophie So, Maria Somerville, and more

For the penultimate time this month we’ve updated our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music with ten new tracks, including two singles we exclusively premiered earlier in the week.

Kicking things off are Sydney-based trio PEPTALK with their new single and our Track of the Week – “Figure It Out”. The single, their latest from their collaborative EP, features Brisbane singer-songwriter Jeremy Neale. A delightful 80s-esque slice of synth-pop, “Figure It Out” is a nostalgic look back at the ‘one that got away’.

It’s heaps of fun with just that right balance of hopefulness and regret – with hope maybe winning out in the end? Bright, bold, wholesome – just great pop songwriting, really – more of the same please! If you don’t know PEPTALK, you’re going to – they’re clearly destined for big things.

“Brave Thing” is the debut release from Czech-British indie artist Sophie So, who is now based in New York City. It’s a brilliant blend of indie experimental pop with a sweet electronic beat bouncing through its core. This is the title-track from her debut EP which will drop later in the year. Sophie has had a trans-continental journey in bringing this together. Born in Prague with British roots, the early demos were recorded in Germany. They were worked on further in New York, and finally co-produced with Rhys Braddock (Blind Künstler, Metronome Blues) in Brno, CZ. You can feel the varied influences throughout.

“Garden” is the new single from Irish musician Maria Somerville. The single is the latest to be released from her forthcoming sophomore album Luster, which is due out April 25th on 4AD/Remote Control. Languid, ethereal and atmospheric “Garden” sees Somerville’s emotive vocals float through a soundscape that manages somehow to be at once both airy and claustrophobic and densely packed.

Perfume Genius, the solo project for Mike Hadreas has released “No Front Teeth” featuring New Zealand’s Aldous Harding. We are massive fans of both artists, so were understandably excited when this hit our inbox. It’s haunting, creative and has many changes of pace throughout. The video is just as out there. Do check it out, but maybe not at work.

London-based Kiwi queer-alt-pop artist Jack Panther continued to tease his hotly anticipated third EP this week with the release of new single “Just a Dog”. Soaring, yet melancholic, the single is steeped in a beautiful vulnerability and just feels incredibly intimate, which makes perfect sense when you discover the inspiration behind it. As Jack describes it: “It’s about falling in love with a friend and instead of telling him how I felt, I wrote this song…” Jack will be playing his first ever show on Australian soil in May. You’ll be able to catch Jack at Melbourne’s The Evelyn Hotel on May 3rd. For tickets head HERE.

We were lucky enough to premiere the debut release from Meanjin/Brisbane-based outfit Left Cassette in July last year, and it’s a thrill to see them evolve and progresss. Their latest track “Always Kinda Late” is another golden slice of indie guitar goodness packed with lovely harmonies and evocative bittersweet emotions that draw on a relationship that has run its course.

Also this week we have added “i miss you and america”, the new indie folk single from Danish singer-songwriter he is tall.. Quirky and whimsical, “i miss you and america” is full of charm, originality, and a hidden melancholy. Simply presented, the song is inspired by an old friend, a shared road trip, and the distance between them – real and metaphorical.

Also added to the playlist this week is “Feels Good”, the new single from Portland singer-songwriter (and Joanna Newsom and Bill Callahan collaborator) Neal Morgan.

Finally, we have added tracks from Paige Barnard (“Strong”) and Stella Cain (“Dog”), which we premiered earlier in the week.
