After taking a short break for Easter and Bluesfest, we’re back and adding ten new tracks to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music.
Our Track of the Week this time around goes to Melbourne singer-songwriter BATTS, who is kicking off her 2022 with a new label and a brand new single, “Blue” which she wrote with tour mate and “songwriting idol” Sharon Van Etten. It’s a beautiful track, which really showcases the sublime vocals of both women. “Blue” is an emotive piece, and yet another jewel in the BATTS songbook.
Sticking with emotive numbers we also have “Forever”, the new single from London-based Lebanese Nigerian singer-songwriter Ramzi. Inspired by the passing of friends and relatives last year, “Forever” is a stripped back and emotive ballad. Dan Mangan’s “In Your Corner (for Scott Hutchison)” is written in response to Frightened Rabbit‘s “The Woodpile” and is dedicated to their late lead singer, Scott Hutchison.
Rockers Bad Pony are back with a ripping new single, “Freddie Kreuger”. They are planning a tour soon, so keep an eye out for that. Melbourne artist Baby Velvet has dropped another single, “What The Hell is Wrong With Me” from her forthcoming debut album, due out on May 27.
The Perth four-piece Great Gable dropped “Dancing Shoes”, a high energy track that will wish the rain away. It’s guitars to the fore, and beautifully produced.
Melbourne’s Lili-Violet released “Anxiety”, a track where the artist sings of her experiences managing her mental health. With vocals that caress and soar, it’s smooth and cathartic.
“Streetfight” is the first single from singer-songwriter Russell Joslin’s new project, Russell Joslin & High Black Water. With a bit of post-punk, some electro-folk, and a dash of 80’s electro influence the track offers up a view of lawless late night London through the eyes of an exhausted Uber driver. It’s an atmospheric piece, with a strong central vocal, and a well-realised and engaging soundscape.
