New Music Discoveries 23rd June: Bloomhaus, Corinne Bailey Rae, Dusty and more

Ten more tracks have been added to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including one track we exclusively premiered earlier in the week. The Track of the Week for this week is “Thoughtless Feeling” — the debut single from Spanish indie-funk outfit Bloomhaus.

Hailing from Barcelona, Bloomhaus is the project of singer, songwriter and music curator Made Torres, along with Albert Tissot, Andreu Robusté, Jordan Crow and Leonard Kowalsky. The five-piece draw their inspiration from 70s funk as well as contemporary acts like Jamiroquai, Khurangbin and Hiatus Kaiyote.

“Thoughtless Feeling” is just a delight from start to finish. It’s bright and bold, with an infectious groove. It’s funky in the most lovely and understated way; with some lovely vocals and good vibes. The perfect antidote to the southern hemisphere winter.

We fell in love with Corinne Bailey Rae at Bluefest in 2017, and her latest release, ‘New York Transit Queen’ will be on forthcoming next album, Black Rainbows, due on the 15th September. The track was inspired by objects and artworks collected by Theaster Gates at the Stony Island Arts Bank in Chicago. It’s a vivid, pulsating track brimming with energy. Fans of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Elastica will vibe on this.

“Don’t Talk About It” is the third single from Melbourne singer-songwriter duo Mister Co. The track is an ‘emancipation piece’ and explores the idea of being held emotionally hostage by those who claim to support you. Drawing upon the pair’s alternative and rock influences, “Don’t Talk About It” is a deceptively impactful rock number. It’s big, bold and full of swagger. Also with that chorus, it’s a bit of a sly earworm too.

We’ve long been fans of Brisbane/Meanjin-based outfit Dusty. Their songs resonate, with infectious melodies and playful and incisive lyrics. Their latest single is “Brat” and shines brightly ’cause it’s an anti-love song. It’s about time we called time on dud relationships.

“It’s about coming out of seeing someone and realising they weren’t actually that great,” Annie explains. You can catch Dusty supporting Young Lines at The Zoo, Brisbane on the 14th July.

Claud has dropped “It’s Not About You” from their upcoming fourth album, Supermodels, also due to be released on the 14th July. It’s a beautifully restained song, elegantly framed and filled to the brim with sensitivity. Of the track, Claud says, ”It’s Not About You’ is a song I wrote about people taking the things you’re going through personally. I experienced this heavily when I was first coming out and receiving reactions that solely centered on the other person focusing on how my identity was going to affect their life. It’s frustrating and isolating, so this song goes out to those who are experiencing backlash at times when they really need support.’

West Australian artist, producer and musician Michael Ellery has just released his new single “Get Them First”. Featuring vocals from Katie J, the track is a stunning slice of atmospheric and moody electro pop. The song, which is about fighting back against metaphorical ‘sharks’ lurking in the shadows, was written with film & TV placement in mind. And, honestly it tracks. We could definitely hear this one soundtracking an Aussie noir drama.

Lovers of shoegaze will be excited about “kisses”, the latest track to drop from UK legends Slowdive. It’s their first new track since their 2017 self-titled album, and is blessed with finesse and beauty. They’ve also announced that their new album, everything is alive, will be out Friday 1st September. They will be touring Australia in July – their are still a handfull of tickets left for their Sydney show.
