Our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music has been updated with a further ten new tracks, including two singles we exclusively premiered earlier in the week. This week our track of the week is “U Should Not Be Doing That”, the new single from the mighty Amyl and the Sniffers.
“U Should Not Be Doing That” is the first single from the band in three years, and is a firm rebuke at those that take aim at frontwoman Amy Taylor for being Amy. Do that at your own peril. We say, never change! It’s fast, furious, empowering and beautifully defiant. Amy will be the keynote speaker at BIGSOUND 24 – it will be standing-room only for that one.
“Skydiver” is the new single from Tennessee singer-songwriter Briston Maroney. Citing the likes of John Prine, Dylan and Neil Young as influences, Maroney straddles the folk/Americana and indie rock camps to surprisingly great effect. “Skydiver” probably leans more towards the indie rock camp, but without losing any of that more writerly sensibility that can often be found amongst folk musicians. Full of introspection, earnestness, and with a dreamlike quality “Skydiver” balances brightness and sparkle with emotion and sensitivity brilliantly.
“Hollywood Hills” is the debut single from former pro-surfer turned singer-songwriter CB Ghost. Written in collaboration with musician Justin Miranda, “Hollywood Hills” is about giving up things that are unhealthy, including negative thoughts. It’s described by CB as “a lesson to self, to health and greenlight a better and happier life”. There’s a strong coastal and surf folk and rock scene in Australia, and with strong distinctive vocals, engaging and poetic lyrics delivered in a simple, honest, and salt-kissed style, CB Ghost sounds right at home in their company.
Highly respected Melbourne indie rockers Ceres have dropped ““Want/Need”, a beautiful celebration of love. It’s gorgeous emotive rock, sweet vocals and features the Northern Voices Choir. In very exciting news, they have announced that their first tour in five years will kick off in July. They will be peforming in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. Check their website for all the details.
Bristol-based singer-songwriter Katy J Pearson, fresh from re-imaging The Wicker Man soundtrack with friends, returns with a new single and a new album on the way. Produced by Bullion, “Those Goodbyes” opens with the transmuted and filtered fragments of a Celtic Blessing, before moving into somewhat new territory for Pearson – pop. Well, sort of… it’s a beautiful track, with big choruses, sublime harmonies, a lovely relaxed lead vocal and some interesting instrumental quirks too.
Odette is back with a new single, “Reverence” and a ‘national’ East Coast headline tour in the pipeline. Cathartic, unconventional, but completely captivating “Reverence” very much takes the listener on a journey. Opening in the guise of a soulful piano ballad, the song goes through quite a transformation as it progresses, with piercing guitar riffs, frantic percussion, and a demonstration of Odette’s vocal power and prowess.
We’ve also added “Black Balloon” from The Joy Hotel, a seven piece alt-rock band from the heart of the east end of Glasgow, “Only Miss You” the new single from Sydney singer-songwriter Lola Scott, as well as premieres from Parker Smith (“Anna Lee”) and Nocturnal Animals (“Ashlee’s Berceuse”).
