We have added another ten tracks to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including two tracks from exclusive premieres this week. Our track of the week is “One Last Drag” from one of our most talented singer/songwriters, Hayley Mary.
The track was co-written and co-produced with her husband, Johnny Took of DMA’S. The track references the regrets from smoking, how the next toke will be just “one last drag”, yet it is analgous to all addictions.
About the track Hayley writes: “I was sitting on the balcony with a wine, borderline chain-smoking, knowing that I would be regretting the cigarettes in the morning but unable to stop. He started looping a guitar intro that he was working on for Gwen Stefani and I just started writing a poem to it in my head. I asked him if I could record it so I wouldn’t forget it, and those draft vocals ended up being the final vocals you hear in the verses.”
Hayley is one of our finest songwriters and vocalists. Since the hiatus of The Jezabels, Hayley has released some incredible music as a solo performer. Her last two EP’s, The Piss, The Perfume, and The Drip were fantastic, and she has continued that rich vein with the latest release. When Hayley Mary drops a new song, you take notice.
Boston-based trio Tiny Habits have released “Wishes”, a delicate and vulnerable track that covers territory such as family dynamics and body image through to anxiety and people-pleasing. They have also announced that their debut album All For Something will be released on the 24th of May. We can’t wait for this one. If you like Boygenius , then you will love Tiny Habits.
Garage rockers Girl and Girl are another band about to drop their debut album, with Call A Doctor being set for release on the 24th May. They’ve also released their latest single, “Oh Boy!”, a track that reminds us that we can grow and develop from difficult times in our life. It has a joyous feel to it, with high-energy vocals and cranking guitars. It captures beautifully the pulsating drive of a band that is always a joy to see live.
“wishiwasyourgirlfriend ” is the title-track of the next EP from South-Coast producer/songwriter ioakim, out the 31st of May. Unrequited love? – he has it captured here. With its captivating beat, this track will take the pain away whilst you give this one a spin.
Speaking of high-energy, a pulsating track to drop this week is “Work” from the UK’s Fat White Family. It’s the final single from their fourth album Forgiveness is Yours which has been released today. There is a sparkling passionate drive and relentless energy to “Work” that will have you jumping about. Hopefully they will be touring Australia soon – their ferocious and unbridled live shows are apparently extraordinary.
We’ve been fans of Swiss outfit Zeal & Ardor since their first visit to Australia in early 2019. Lead singer and songwriter Manuel Gagneux mashes up blues, folk, black-metal, jazz and more into his own unique pastiche. “To My Ilk” has a refined delicacy, with its sweet blues guitars, claps and gorgeous harmonies.
“Hang in There” is the new single from Maya Hawke, who at the age of twenty five, is about to release her third album, Chaos Angel – on the 31st of May. This beautiful track is an emotive salve to anyone who has been through a toxic relationship. If you dig Joni Mitchell, (who doesn’t!), then you should find some love for this one.
Speaking of toxic relationships, yet closer to home, Central Coast artist NEAV has kicked on from her 2022 debut EP, ELEGY, with another new song, “Against Me”. About the track NEAV writes: “Against Me stems from situations where I have been too trusting… it’s an anthem for people pleasers who have been stabbed in the back too many times!”. This is fabulously emotive pop-rock with killer vocals.
Finally, we have two premieres this week from Wilding (“I Am”) and Butterknife (Lilith EP).
