New Music Discoveries 26th July: Tora, Angie McMahon, Katie Gavin, and more

For the final time this month we’ve added ten of the best new tracks to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including single we premiered earlier in the week. Our final Track of the Week for July is “Let Down” the latest single from Berlin/Bali/Amsterdam-via-Byron band Tora.

“Let Down” is the latest taster from the quartet’s highly anticipated new album Temps De Flors – due September 6th. A moody and beautifully layered ballad, the single is described by the band as ‘a deeply emotional song’ that is a celebration of ‘everything that has been given to us by our ancestors… all the blood, sweat and tears that led to our existence and the incredible societies we live in’.

Initially conceived to be much more stripped back, the song took on a new life in the studio in Catalonia, with added piano, drums, synths and bass. Then you have those beautiful and rich harmonies. It all makes for an engaging, beguiling and warming soundscape.

With a new album comes a new tour and Tora are going global. It’s all kicking off in Europe in October, before hitting the Americas and Canada in November and coming to a close in Australia in late November and December for three dates across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Angie McMahon has just dropped “Just Like North”, her first new music since her brilliant 2023 release, Light, Dark, Light Again. It’s beautiful, delicate and insightful, acknowledging that life will have it’s painful moments. Embrace them and trust the process. It’s hard to believe that it was an out-take from the record. Angie has a big back-half of the year ahead of her, touring the US, Canada, The UK and Germany. Head to her website for more details if you are in that neck of the woods.

“Aftertaste” is the debut solo single from MUNA lead singer Katie Gavin, and the first single from her upcoming album What A Relief, which will be released on Saddest Factory Records on October 25th. According to Gavin, “Aftertaste” was the perfect introduction to her solo project, ‘because to me it kind of serves as a bridge, sonically and thematically, between MUNA’s world and the world we are going to with the solo record.’ It’s a delightful slice of unabashed romantic pop. There’s an endearing sweetness and brightness to it all, and it’s clear that Gavin has an ear for a quality lyric too.

Radio Free Alice was one of the highlights of the Sounds Australia showcase at The Great Escape in Brighton in May. If you love classic guitar-driven indie-rock, you need to take a dive into these guys. There is a buzz about them and for good reason. “Johnny” has some sweet The Cure vibes about it, and will be on their upcoming EP, Polyester, to be released on the 21st of August.  They have just announced a national tour kicking off on the 15th of August in Byron Bay, finishing up in Perth on the 6th of September. Head to their website to get all the details.

Austin, TX-based project Being Dead return this week with their new single “Van Goes” and a mildly unhinged accompanying music video. The track is from their new album EELS, which is out September 27th. It’s moody and rocking, but also playful and just a lot of fun, opening as it does with a recording of a frustrated bus driver. There’s enough good going on here to ensure our interest is piqued for the rest of the album in September.

It’s album release-day for Lime Cordiale, with their third album Enough of the Sweet Talk hitting the streaming services and beyond today. The album has a fun and brave them of each song being paired to a stage of a relationship. The focus and title-track, and sitting fairly early on in the track-list, is “Enough Of the Sweet Talk”. The melody is on this is beautiful, even if there might be trouble in paradise! Make sure you catch them on their album tour, kicking off in October.

“I Forget About Time” from Sydney’s Salarymen is a beautiful ode to our four legged friends. It’s another gorgeous serving of dreamy surf-pop from the duo. About the track, they write:  “This song is for all the people who immediately locate the dog at a house party and spend the whole night with them. And those who say they’re too busy to come out as they’ve already got plans (with their dog). When everything’s going wrong and people in your life are disappointing you, you can always trust a doggo to make you feel better. They don’t talk back or give you any shit – they just radiate pure joy, and when they eventually depart this world, a piece of you goes with them.”

You have to watch the video – *cute dog alert* – it is totally entrancing, smile-giving and mood-lifting.

“Sunrise” is the brilliant new single from WA’s DICE. Accompanying the single is the announcement that the band will be heading out on a 24 stop world tour across September, October and November to celebrate the release of their debut album Midnight Zoo (out Aug 9th). “Sunrise” sees the band go big in sound, energy and vibes – it’s bold, bright, lively and full of optimism. It also makes for quite an empowering listen, tacking the journey of coming to terms with grief and the loss of loved ones. For more information on the band’s world tour head HERE.
