New Music Discoveries 28th February: Littlefair, Twat Union, Geography, and more

Littlefair

On the final day of February, we’ve updated our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music with ten new tracks, including two singles we exclusively premiered earlier in the week.

Our track of the week goes to WA indie-folk-rock outfit Littlefair, with their gorgeous new single, “Jacket”. It’s fresh, buoyant and uplifting, as they sing of the scaries of dealing with a new crush, as they explain: “We wanted to capture that rush, where you’re trying to find reasons to spend time together–like stealing jackets and sneaking into house parties you heard they might be at. The lyrics are teenage and fun, but I think the core of wanting to be loved is universal.”. With beautiful harmonies and crisp production it’s reminiscent of the wonderful Club Hoy back in the day. You can catch them at Nannup Music Festival this weekend.

“Bad Life” is the new single from the British-born, Nigerian-raised artist Mudi Sama. The track follows hot on the heels of his debut “Jealous Type” and takes inspiration from alternative culture and the likes of Bloc Party, Dominic Fike and The Strokes. According to Sama, “Bad Life” is ‘a song about rebellion, living through the chaos and figuring it out yourself – ignoring the outside noise.’ Taut, muscular, with shredded guitars and poignant vocals “Bad Life” affirms Sama as one to watch.

This week saw London feminist performance-art-punks Twat Union sign to Alcopop! Records, releasing their new single “Singer Of The Band” to celebrate the occasion. The track is a cutting and witty critique of the culture of mansplaining and sexism in music. According to the band, the song is “about the assumption that you’re the singer of the band just because you’re a woman. All female musicians will have an experience that they could tell you about where they have been spoken to as if they don’t know how to play their instrument. So we wrote this thrashy anthem for them (and us).“ It’s a theme that’s explored further in the accompanying music video. “Singer Of The Band” is brimming with a provocative playfulness – delivering an important and necessary message with a healthy dose of joy and edge. There’s plenty of buzz around this band and their much anticipated debut EP Don’t Look It In The Eye is one to look out for!

Naarm/Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Geography has today released the title -track from her debut EP, Cyclone, to be released on the 27th of March. It’s atmospheric and dreamy, with a lush broad soundscape. About the song, Geography shares, “Cyclone is about the whirlwind of new love. It was one of those rare songs I wrote in one go after the confronting realization of my feelings for someone.”

“Always Some MF” is the new single from British-Canadian singer-songwriter Matt Maltese. The track, which is off his new album Hers (out May 16th), sees Maltese exploring the feeling that there’s “always some MF” out there vying for the affections of his partner. The end product is beautiful, emotive and full of vulnerability. There’s an easy grace and charm to it all – the vocals, the delivery, the melodies. The press release describes Maltese as one of the “most quietly artful songwriters at work right now”, and it’s hard to disagree based on this listen.

Rowena Wise and teamed up with Didirri, to release their new single, “No Cure for Love”. Two of our favourite indie-folk artists, they have also announced an eleven date East Coast and West Coast tour, kicking off on the 26th June in Meanjin/Brisbane. Head here for all the dates. There is a beautiful intimacy to the track, as the duo, who are life-partners, honestly dissect and articulate the challenges of a long-term relationship;  “….This song captures those moments where we have crumbled, said hurtful things, and had to look at our options. We came out of that chapter ready to face the challenge of our love, realising we can only love and respect each other if we do this for ourselves first. We can’t take each other (and ourselves) for granted if we want to be companions in this long journey together.”

Also added to the playlist this week is “THINK LESS”, the new single from Northern Rivers-based garage rock band GREG; and “For The Thrill Of It” the new single from singer-songwriter Annie Dressner.

Finally, we have added tracks from Nicholas Brown (“Strange Shadow”) and Garage Noise (“Eden”)  which we premiered earlier in the week.
