New Music Discoveries 2nd Aug: The Butlers, Kitschen Boy, Good Pash, and more

As Olympic fever takes hold, this week we have updated our Discovery Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music with ten new tracks, including two we exclusively premiered. This week our Track of the Week is “Painting My Roof Again” from New Zealand’s indie psych-rock  band The Butlers.

Painting My Roof Again” features beautiful melodies, exquisite musicianship and dreamy harmonies as they sing of the simple pleasure of being in love with someone and wanting to grow old with them. A timeless emotion that is wonderfully captured.

“On Notice” is the new single from Naarm-based rock outfit Kitschen Boy, their first since the release of their acclaimed sophomore EP – Now Arriving At Panic Station. The new single is a welcome continuation of the band’s signature jangly sound, and is dripping in reverb and packed with relatable and earnest lyricism.

According to frontman Dylan Baddeley: ’This song depicts the frustrating journey of ruminating and lamenting the efforts that went into a relationship that never came together.’ And, there’s a sense of size to the track, it’s got a big production and a big sound, but that sense of frustration and melancholy is always trickling away under the surface too. The band are out on the road over the next few months supporting Teen Jesus and The Jean Teasers, The Grogans and Beddy Rays, so keep an eye out for them at a venue near you.

“The Reprieve”  from the Sydney/Gadigal Land garage quintet, Good Pash,  is an ethereal foray of wandering drums and wet guitars, with reverberant vocals singing of misunderstood affection.

“Realms” is the latest single to be released from Sarah Kinsley’s forthcoming debut album, Escaper which is set for release early next month on Verve Forecast. According to Kinsley, “Realms” is about questioning the infinite possibilities of alternate universes and parallel planes: ‘In another world maybe I’m not a musician, maybe I’m a dentist, a graduate student, a barista, a child, a memory, an experience, a thing that never occurred, a person that never was! These are unknown eternities of who we might be in some other realm.’ Built around that interesting central conceit, it’s a beautiful and compelling slice of grandiose pop music; though that’s not surprising given Kinsley’s background in classical music. And with Grammy Award-winning producer John Congleton on board, we can’t wait to hear the rest of the album next month.

Youth Group have just released “Siberia”, their first new track in five years. The track has a dance feel to it, and was co-written by Toby Martin and NYC-based musician and DJ, MING, who met whilst doing a house sway via Craigs List! The track will be on their long-awaited album which will hopefully drop early in 2025.

“Some Things Hurt A Little More” is the new single from Jamie Sutherland, the frontman of Scotland’s Broken Records. The single is from his upcoming solo album, The World As It Used To Be, which is set for release on September 6th. Sutherland consciously wanted to write an ‘adult record’ for this project, something in the style of John Prine, Dylan and Leonard Cohen’s later work, something from an ‘older’ point of view. “Some Things Hurt A Little More”, in part inspired by Joni Mitchell, is quite simply beautiful. It’s full of gentle warmth, and whilst initially has a melancholic air, it does build towards what feels like a more hopeful climax.

Also added to the playlist this week are new tracks from London-via-Australia singer-songwriter Ellis King (“Better Luck”) and The Voice Australia alumni, Brisbane’s Liam Keates-Ryley (“Runnin'”), and two tracks which we exclusively premiered from Loons (“Money Honey”)  and Jack Biilmann & The Black Tide (“Folsom Prison Blues”).
