New Music Discoveries 30th June: Jada Weazel, King Stingray, Kirsteen Harvey and more

Jada Weazel

As we hit the half-way point of 2023, we’ve added ten more tracks to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including one track we exclusively premiered earlier in the week. Our track of the week is “Skin” from First Nations artist Jada Weazel.

Jada is an emerging singer/songwriter from Woorabinda in Central Queensland. “Skin” is her debut single, and showcases a silky smooth voice that takes its roots from soul and RnB.

Drawing influence from the likes of Alicia Keys and soul legends such as Aretha Franklin, it look as though Jada has found her own voice and style. “Skins” is a track that has a beguiling beauty, oozing restraint and class and is intricately textured.

The track was produced by Grammy-nominated producers UNO Stereo & LEN20. Jada has signed on with EMI Music Australia, so you can expect to hear more from this exciting artist as the year rolls on.

“Way Up There” is the new single from Mathilde Anne. The Melbourne songstress struggles with unrequited public love in a new relationship. Upbeat syncopated rhythms carry the dark jazz melodies and vulnerable vocals in this smooth offering.

Glasgow singer-songwriter Kirsteen Harvey this week releases the first track from her forthcoming debut EP. “One More Day” is a high energy number, that’s chock full of warmth and good vibes. Written after returning home from a holiday with friends, the single perfectly captures that feeling of sun-kissed nostalgia and wanting the good times to never end.

King Stingray is back with “Lookin’ Out”, their first release since their brilliant debut album that dropped last year. It’s a bold reassurance of the talent of the group that is in the middle of their national tour.

Baby Gravy is the winning combination of bbno$ and Yung Gravy. “You Need Jesus” is ridiculously catchy, extremely irreverent and undoubtedly going to offend a few.

Keeping things in Glasgow, “Luna” is the debut single from alternative duo Empty Machines. The band started life as a solo instrumental project for Thomas Crawford, working out of his home studio, before enlisting Jodie Helena as vocalist. The duo’s sound is a powerful blend of different elements from alternative, electronic and ambient genres. “Luna” is a bit of a statement of intent from the band, and really showcases their atmospheric wall of sound style.

Also added to the playlist is the “Take This Slow”, the sophomore single from Queensland alt rockers Plain Colours; and “a beast is me” the lead single from the new album by singer-songwriter harry hook is real.

Finally, we have an exclusive video premiere from Joe Mungovan.
