New Music Discoveries 9th February: Olympia, girl in red, Telenova and more

We’ve added ten more tracks to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including two singles we premiered exclusively earlier in the week. Our Track of the Week is “Try Be Good” the brand new single from Olympia.

Olympia has had a busy time of it lately. She’s built a brand new record label – Reach Around Records, and now she’s releasing a brand new single – her first since 2019’s Flamingo. According to Olympia “Try Be Good” is ‘a song about the things you do, the one-foot in front of the other, to make it back to yourself’ or doing ‘what you have to to get through it’.

New Olympia is always welcome here at the AU and this is nothing short of a swaggering return – taut, stylish, and with a killer groove. This one is going to be on repeat for the next week!

Anyone who caught girl in red at Laneway 2023 or in one of the sideshows would have been blown away. Without a doubt, one of the must-see acts, particularly amongst Gen-Z. We caught her sideshow at the Metro in Sydney and were giddy for days. In exciting news this week, girl in red dropped a new single “Too Much”, and announced that her new album, I’M DOING IT AGAIN BABY!  will be released on the 12th of April. We can’t wait to hear more from the album if the lead single is an indication.

“Microdose” is the debut single from Eora-based artist and singer-songwriter total tommy. Mixed by London superproducer Dan Carey and produced by Mark Zito “Microdose” is a quietly confident debut, with an infectious nervous energy and lo-fi sensibilities. Fully expect to hear more from total tommy in the future.

AU favourites Telenova have released “Teardrop”, another cinematic aural masterclass. They’ve announced a national tour in May – head to their website for further details.

West Australian rising star Darcie Haven shared another teaser from forthcoming debut project – new single “Hollywood”. According to Darcie the single “is almost a word for word diary entry from a time when I was feeling really stagnant and frustrated. I felt like I should have been further along in life than what I was, and was bursting at the seams to get there.” There’s a wonderful haziness and warmth to the production that just complements Haven’s vocals perfectly. It’s somewhat reminiscent of Kacey Musgraves circa Golden Hour.

Wild Rivers are a Canadian trio, creating beautifully styled indie-folk, with pop and indie-rock thrown into the mix. Their latest release, “Everywhere I Go” is a heartfelt touchstone to anyone who has passed away and is dearly missed. It’s poignant, touching and features some sweet harmonies. They are currently supporting Noah Kahan on his European tour.

“Salvavidas” is the new single from Chicago express-pop duo Valebol. The track which is from their forthcoming self-titled album (out April 5th) is “a cautionary tale of an overachieving lifeguard who can save lives but not their own relationship”. It’s also eminently danceable, combining Latin grooves with the sounds of indie pop. Think synths, bongos and dreamy vocals. It’s bright, bold, and a lot of fun. It’s also conveniently hits 120 BPM which is perfect for CPR.

Finally, we have two new exclusive premieres from Lima Delta  (“Ghosts”)  and Ruby Jones (“Feeling of Falling”).
