Alaska Projects, Sydney’s newest ARI, will officially launch on Wednesday 5 October 2011 with the Car Park Project; a collaboration with the City of Sydney to establish a unique artists’ project space within the forgotten mechanics’ office located in the basement of the Kings Cross Car Park.
Alaska’s first exhibition, Lorem Ipsum: Opening Group Show 1, features the diverse work of a number of artists who will inhabit the space over the 2011/2012 exhibition program, including:
Nick Collerson / Bridie Connell / Sarah Contos / Chloe Hughes / Phil James / Biljana Jancic / Bernadette Jones / Samuel Hodge / Siouxzi Mernagh / Jess Olivieri / Tom Polo / Rupert Reid / Sarah Rodigari.
Measuring a mere 5×5 metres, the converted mechanics’ office features a concrete floor with an original yellow parking bay line splitting it in two. Alaska Projects’ director Sebastian Goldspink has designed the project space as a modular white cube to give artists the freedom to either embrace of dramatically alter this unique built environment. Participating artists are encouraged to experiment with mediums outside of their usual practise and to collaborate with artists of divergent disciplines.
The Car Park Project has also been conceived to operate beyond the white cube of the project space, with exhibition elements planned throughout the car park, including its stairwells, elevators and common areas.
Alaska Projects seeks to expand into additional diverse, hidden or unnoticed locations throughout Sydney for further exhibitions and residencies.
