Multi-disciplinary vocalist Sampha is set to return to Australia and New Zealand in February/March 2024 in the wake of his successful sophomore album LAHAI.
Following the announcement of a coveted Perth Festival slot, the singer/songwriter/ producer will take the stage in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Auckland. With LAHAI, Sampha invites listeners on a transformative journey, and this will manifest in physical form in a special improvisational Melbourne show. Taking place in a theatre-in-the-round performance style at Margaret Court Arena, fans can experience the complexity and emotional depth of Sample’s catalogue in a visual spectacle.
Rising to fame after collaborating with renowned artists including Solange (most notably her stunning single, “Don’t Touch My Hair”), Frank Ocean (featuring on 2018’s “Alabama”) and Kendrick Lamar (thoroughly pushing him into the spotlight with “Father Time”), Sampha has been avoiding the spotlight for the last few years. This was nothing short of unexpected, particularly following the artist’s debut record Process, which received critical acclaim and took out the 2017 Mercury Prize, with the fourth track “(No One Knows Me) Like the Piano” included in Pitchfork’s 200 Best Songs of the 2010s.
LAHAI, the newest release from the London-born artist, is an album bearing the weight of profound introspection and his grandfather’s name. Artistic exploration is central to the record, with the 14 tracks blurring the boundaries of jazz, soul, rap, dance, jungle, and West African influences. The album is also a testament to his creative partnerships, with contributions from Yaeji, Léa Sen, Sheila Maurice Grey (Kokoroko), Ibeyi, Morgan Simpson (black midi), Yussef Dayes, Laura Groves and Kwake Bass. LAHAI differs from Process, from dark to light, where Sampha sound emerges from a grief-stricken state into the warmth of community and love.
The tour, supported by Double J, opens for pre-sale at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, 1st November, with general on-sale starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, 2nd November.
