Up until this point, 22-year-old singer-songwriter Nicole Millar has best been known as that lush voice that drove Peking Duk’s mega-hit “High”. Her recently released debut single “Wait” took the repute a bit further, toning down the buzzy high and delivering us something a bit more delicate to showcase the dynamic, silky vocals she possesses.
The single has been all over radio as of late, drawing comparisons to fellow Aussie George Maple with that velvety, atmospheric approach to softly textured dance music. Now it’s time for her to deliver the visuals for the gorgeous record, drawing upon the talents of Sydney creative team Voena who have directed an emotive and striking video that blends California dreaming with something more intimate and disconnected from reality.
“Jack [Toohey] and I have been working with each other for years so it was just natural to use Voena to help create my video clip. I’m always collecting images and coming up with visual ideas – a process which is really important to me. I created a mood board and sent it to Jack with some ideas linked and he was keen to make this happen. I had a vision for a light box that I could perform on and use in the video clip as I wanted everything to be connected. The video clip was shot and organised within a week – it all happened so fast but that’s how Jack and I have always worked together. We like to do things very organically with a small crew and people that are passionate about the project. I’m so so excited to work on more videos, I hope you like this one as I’m really proud of it,” says Nicole of the clip and working with Voena.
