The emergence of Spinifex Gum over the last few months has been totally welcomed one, as we’ve been introduced to Marilya in particular. The story of how this collaborative project between Felix Riebl, Ollie McGill, Marilya and their family of special guests is one we’re glad has been told and moreover, we’re stoked to see that two Spinifex Gum shows are coming up for music fans in Melbourne and Adelaide in March.
If you’ve not yet heard of Spinifex Gum, Marilya exists at the core of the project. With former and current members of the Gondwana Indigenous Children’s Choir, Marilya is led by Artistic Director Lyn Williams OAM, and through their link up with Riebl and McGill, Spinifex Gum was formed. Topical, brutally honest and genuinely moving, the music Spinifex Gum has released so far has struck right at the heart of Indigenous struggles, and the poignancy of the words coming forth from the youth of community who are striving for something better.
The shows set up for March will see Spinifex Gum joined by special guests in Briggs, Peter Garrett, Emma Donovan and Christine Anu, as their electrifying music is realised live in an unmissable show environment.
“I’m excited to be a part of this groundbreaking collaboration.” Garrett has said. “The songs are terrific; heartfelt and full of meaning. The Spinifex Gum project evokes and portrays experiences and issues confronting people living in a distant part of Australia in a poignant and hard hitting way. We need music and words like this.”
