The 21st edition of BIGSOUND kicked off yesterday in emphatic style. It opened with a smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country. There was a moving tribute to the late Archie Roach, and performances from Kutcha Edwards, Fanny Lumsden, Loren Ryan and Beddy Rays with a guest appearance from Jen Cassar Daly.
The artist showcases were spread out over 20+ venues in Fortitude Valley. It was a challenging exercise working out who to say. There were no wrong decisions, the curation for the festival is spot on.
We got out and about and did our best to see as much as we could.
Chloe Dadd kicked off proceedings in Black Bear Lodge, and the perfect start to the evening.

HANNI demonstrated why she is an artist with such a buzz about her. A polished show, adoring crowd – the complete package

Turning the volume up was VOIID at The Zoo. Their set was maximum energy. If you haven’t seen them before, but love WAAX and Amyl and the Sniffers, then don’t miss VOIID next time they are in town.

I’ve been wanting to see Teenage Joans for ages now. They didn’t disappoint. Can’t wait to see them again
And the night finished off with the Secret Sounds secret shows. There were three to choose from, spread out over Fortitude Valley. The rumours started to pop up early evening, with Marlon Williams, WAAX and Sycco all touted.
They proved to be correct, and I finished the night where I started, back in the Black Bear Lodge with Marlon Williams. With a full band, he was of course in fine voice, and good humour. What a talent.
