girl in red (Marie Ulven) is currently in Australia for the Laneway Festival. She managed to squeeze in two side shows along the way, one in Melbourne and the other was in Sydney. We were lucky enough to be at the Sydney show.
Betty Taylor opened the show. It was one of those gigs where it was packed before the support act started. girl in red fans had been queueing outside since the morning, so they had an enthusiastic reception. The duo hail from the Sunshine Coast, and despite only releasing their debut single, “Stallin'” in November, they’ve been capturing plenty of attention, and rightly so. Sweet harmonies, heartfelt lyrics and a warm rapport with the crowd had them winning new fans in spades.
I was lucky enough to see girl in red at Laneway, so had some idea of what was to come. An incredible live show, full of energy and an audience that seemingly knew every word to every song meant that the show flew by.
The band was tight and full of vigour. Opening with the belter “You Stupid Bitch, the energy continued all the way to the finale of “i wanna be your girlfriend”.
Some audience participation including the inevitable request for a ‘shoey‘ to be performed. Marie wisely delegated this to a willing audience member. Well done Mary for putting your hand up for that one.
