Lollapalooza aftershows can be tough tasks. Spending 10 hours in the hot sun if Grant Park can be exhausting and quite taxing. So then to turn around go across town and strap in for another 2 and a half hours of music can be quite the challenge. Luckily, Tank and the Bangas played a set Friday night at Thalia Hall that would have shaken anyone out of exhaustion and into full on party mode.
The New Orleans 10 piece band gained notoriety from winning NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert contest three years ago. But as the band has evolved, they have ditched the kazoos and become a full on rock set.
Their set was an all out 90 minute mix of funk, soul, jazz, hip hop and a little bit of flute. The first 3 minutes rocked harder than anything on any stage so far at Lollapalooza. Then the incredible presence of lead singer Tarriona “Tank” Ball took the stage and what began was one of the most energy packed, audience engaging concert I have seen in a long time.
They gave the audience every single thing they had and mixed in a few surprises, with covers of Kendrick Lamar, OutKast and even a rendition of “Happy Birthday” for their drummer Joshua Johnson.
The evolution of this band from viral YouTube darlings to all out incredible stage performers has been the greatest thing I have seen so far at Lollapalooza.
Make it a point to see this band any chance you can get. Just be ready to dance, sing and scream.
