Second Hand Heart – Self-Titled (2011 EP)

Melbourne five-piece Second Hand Heart write gorgeous melodies that stimulate the senses while tugging at your heart strings with their serene, emotive sounds.

Their self-titled EP is a collection of songs that showcase the band’s maturity, with a depth to their sound which is severely lacking in the vast majority of popular music. The dual vocals provided by Jess Carroll and Lily Parker float above the delicate arrangements as they croon about love, life and loss with a passionate ache.

Opener “Silent Space” gently unfolds as the harmonies swirl amidst a backdrop of acoustic guitar that builds into a lush soundscape that soothes and delights. “Set Me Free” is a divine mix of folky/blues that ends with a climactic mesh of guitar, drums and keys as the band let loose with their improvisational skills. “Sweet Little Nothings” is a moody number that stands out from the rest with its brooding bass and intoxicating vocals, showing the bands rockier influences.

Second Hand Heart write moving, integral music that is breathtakingly intimate and beautifully arranged. They have a versatile sound that is vibrant and intense and their self-titled EP is engaging, sensory bliss.
