Perth alt-rockers Shangrila are looking to the brighter side of life with their latest offering ‘Sunlight’, released 13 May. After welcoming two new members to the band, they are celebrating the good times rather than dwelling on the downs of their 2021 EP Analog Youth.
“We decided after the long and generally depressing COVID period that we needed to set our minds on something positive, and after welcoming two new members we thought this track would be a perfect breath of fresh air,” the band explains. “We wanted to make sure we enjoyed every part of the process for this release and keep things moving in a positive direction after the constant show cancellations and uncertainty of the last couple years.”
“‘Sunlight’ is a song about blocking out the noise of the outside world and being in the moment with the person you love,” they continue. “It’s an ode to the big nights out and the special moments where everything else happening in your life just falls away for a while.”
To compliment the release, we had each member share their ideal day out in their hometown.

A perfect day that ‘Sunlight’ takes me to would have to be just waking up with someone you love on a Saturday, going down to grab a coffee and any good food involving bacon, then just enjoying the time you have away from work and reality together. Followed by a night of activities with all the friends you love. Of course, when I say “someone you love”, I’m referring to my Greyhound Spud.
Devyn Jupp (vocals)
I’d start the morning with a nice wholesome trip to the dog park followed by coffee from the local “Little Nolla”. In summer I’d probably head to the beach but now it’s getting colder, it’s nice to just cosy up and write some music inside. I’m pretty happy to head out anywhere in Perth as long as it’s with good company and maybe some live music but I’ll never say no to a pit stop at “Foxtrot Unicorn” for an old fashioned.
Dan Harper (drums)
My perfect day would include a long leisurely sleep followed by a hearty brunch at a cafe on Beaufort Street in Mt Lawley. Would love to sit down in the practice room and work on some drums in the afternoon followed by going to see a great gig in the city or in Freo!
Gabrielle Morri (bass)
I’m an absolute sucker for a good stack of pancakes so would start my day at a casual 10am or so (no early mornings here!) by heading down to Bib and Tucker for their banana pancakes and a coffee to pick me up. During the day I’d hang out with friends and maybe work on one of the billion projects I have on the go at any one time. In the evening, I couldn’t go past a few holes at Holey Moley and seeing a good band at Amps with my closest friends.
Chad Lambert (guitar)
Always got to start the day with some good coffee! During the day I’d like to stop by an arcade, any arcade as long as they have Time Crisis! And to finish off its hard for me to go past Varsity Bar and their delicious vegan options!
Shangrila will be launching the release at Perth’s Amplifier Bar on 2 July, supported by Idle Eyes, Spici Water and Thank You Frank.
