Since I Left You, Sydney’s vibrant city laneway bar, is bringing back SILY Sessions, a series of intimate boutique music events with cocktails and food.
Nestled down a laneway to the backdrop of heritage sandstone architecture, Since I Left You’s enchanting courtyard will be hosting SILY Sessions, showcasing a diverse mix of musical talent. For $20 a ticket, guests will get to enjoy an afternoon and evening of live performances, the famous SILY Antipasti Table and $12 cocktail specials all day.
Ribongia from Bare Neccessities/FBi Radio will be bringing the supremely talented Kaloune all the way from La Réunion to Australia. Kaloune grew up listening to and playing maloya – the traditional reunionese music passed down through her ancestors; creole slaves – where singing is a form of prayer, and her earliest memories of using her voice were to sing in rituals for ancestors and the spirits of Nature.
It was through these rituals that Kaloune realised the true power of voice.
“It’s the power of freedom, of liberation of oneself, of redemption of our own souls,” Kaloune said.
“Slaves were singing to turn the suffering into joy, make bad turn into good.”
It’s a potent message, and one that is reflected immediately when you hear her voice. In solo shows, accompanied only by the Zimbabwean mbira (thumb piano) and electronic beats, the sweetness, clarity and authenticity of her sound immediately draws the listener in, holding the ear in a trance-like state until she chooses to break the spell.
Building a new poetical speech that weaves prayer, song, nursery rhyme, and poetry, in both creole and french, Kaloune expresses who she is. Check out Kaloune’s Youtube page here for a better understanding of what she’s about.
A finalist for the Indian Ocean Music prize and selected to participate in both IOMMA and Réunion’s premier music festival, SAKIFO, Kaloune’s exploration of new sounds and electronic music will see her launch her debut E.P, Kalouména later this year.
Kaloune will be supported by Sydney’s own Maia Marsh, and DJ Leonado Di Casio.
