Single Stream: She Rex – “11th Hour” (2012)

Out of the 20 bands that played at the recent Stamping Grounds Festival, She Rex were easily the most unique and talented group there, thus making them my favourite. They’ve just released their first single, “11th Hour”, meaning I get to listen to them, and use the phrase ‘sultry rap-rock.’

The girls have already been compared to Rage Against The Machine when it comes to sound, but I’d put this down to there being few bands that come to mind in the genre of rap-rock. She Rex have a more urban flair, combining growling synths, buzzing guitar, and throbbing drums to end up with a dirty, sexy, slur.

Then of course, there’s the rapping. Nikkita spits out rhymes and alliterations on the track with barely a breath between them – and they’re actually good, describing the young band’s anticipation and excitement about entering the music business. The rapid-fire verses are balanced nicely with the slower, simpler chorus, preventing the song from feeling too overwhelming and wordy.

She Rex are developing a style that is distinctly their own, and I couldn’t be more excited to hear what they’ve got in store for us next. For now, you can listen to the song below, download it for free, and let us know what you think of their sultry rap-rock.
